Cultures of Sound: Showcasing musical innovation

Exhibitions, Residencies, Performances, Workshops, Experiments, Talks & Discussion

Cultures of Sound is the School of Arts and Humanities’ contribution to Kirklees Year of Music, showcasing innovative collaborations and boundary-pushing experiments in sound undertaken by our researchers and staff.

A remarkable array of creative and cultural practices are represented from subject areas across the school, with practitioners taking the opportunity to develop new work, deepen their ongoing research with public engagement, or adapt immersive and interactive installations into new environments.

The first event, on 23 February, is a screening of They Danced As One. This documentary, filmed by artist Alison J Carr in 2019, features a reunion of the famed Tiller Girls dance troupe and will be live scored by composer-performer Rob Bentall.

Tickets for this free event at 19:00 GMT in Heritage Quay on campus are available via Eventbrite.

Future events include a free performance at 13:00 on 16 March by Electric Sufi, the trio that fuses electronica with traditional Egyptian music featuring the University’s Professor of Music Rupert Till. Discover more about this and other events on Eventbrite or by following @Culturesof_ on Twitter and Instagram.

The Tiller Girls dancing

Huddersfield already has a reputation as an important centre for innovative and historically significant music practices, but with this programme we have invited practitioners working in all creative mediums to contribute, considering ‘sound’ as broadly as imagination allows.

The intention is not only to represent and promote the work of our researchers and staff, but also to establish and augment links between subject areas and the creative innovation that this can facilitate.

Continuing from Cultures of Place which took place across The Piazza and Queensgate Market in Huddersfield Town Centre, the galleries and café in Sovereign Design House will act as a hub for the Cultures of Sound programme, with exhibitions and events taking place across the University of Huddersfield campus and the wider Kirklees area.

Look out for monthly listings and free bookable events that will be released over the coming weeks, and find documentation and reflection on Cultures of Place in the recently published catalogue here: bit.ly/CulturesofPlace
