Students get creative for drink safety awareness

Students from the Costume Society at the University of Huddersfield have been using their creative and sewing skills to help and protect other students.

They have designed and created ‘Huddies’, after a suggestion by the campus Safer Student Police officer PC Phil Hardy to create something that would help tackle the issue of drink spiking, a topic often covered in the national news. While Huddersfield does not have large spiking issues, many students welcome this positive step to keeping safe.

So after a little design and prototyping by the Costume Society President Caroline Devonport, the Huddie was born. The scheme has also won the Campaign Recognition Award from the University's Students Union.

Students have been busy cutting and stitching Huddies ready for sale to students, with donations going the Huddersfield charity WomenCentre, who provide a range of services for women in the area. They have not only produced the Huddies but also a range of advice literature to accompany them.

There is more information on the Huddies website, created by students as part of the project.
