Estonian Student Wins Hospitality Management Course Prize

Jevgenia Tomina has won the George Glew Memorial Prize for best final year performance on BA Hospitality Management. After leaving her native Estonia, Jevgenia chose to study Hospitality Management in the UK. She opted for the University of Huddersfield and very quickly settled into life in the north of England, making many friends and becoming a popular student on the course.

Dr Andrew Jenkins, her Course Tutor, says: "Jevgenia is a truly outstanding student, achieving top marks in every single module that she took. She not only studied hospitality management but its practices it as well! She is hospitable to the core and is always positive, enthusiastic, determined and engaged. Jevgenia has a keen interest in wine. This became the topic for her final-year research dissertation which she mastered with aplomb".

It was these qualities that came to the fore when she undertook a 48-week placement at the Stanwich Club, a golf resort in Connecticut, USA.  The Stanwich Club encompasses a first-class clubhouse, a junior Olympic sized pool, tennis courts, paddle courts and three dining venues. Whilst working at the Club, Jevgenia honed her hospitality skills and was able to apply these skills and knowledge to her final year of study, achieving a first-class honours degree.

Jevgenia says: "choosing to study at the University of Huddersfield completely changed my life and it was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. Be decisive in stepping out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself consistently. I am very thankful that the University of Huddersfield has helped me to become better and provided an opportunity to gain life-long skills and knowledge, and to achieve excellence in my career".

Jevegenia is now undertaking a Graduate Management position at Jurys Inn for two years.  This role will allow her to get training in all hotel departments in order to understand all the operational processes, and how they work together, as well as to be able to take responsibilities and work-based projects to add value to the organisation and her career.
Jevgenia has the skills, knowledge and the resolve to succeed in her chosen career. She is the embodiment of a successful hospitality graduate: resourceful, intuitive, resilient and adaptable.
