Award-winning author Johny Pitts is to appear at an online event as part of the Huddersfield Literature Festival on 24 March.
Johny will be in conversation with Dr Berenice Golding, Senior Lecturer in Health and Community Development at the University of Huddersfield, in conjunction with the University’s Broaden My Bookshelf initiative.
His most recent book, Afropean: Notes from Black Europe (Penguin/Allen Lane), saw Johny win the Jhalak prize in 2020, a prestigious annual award that celebrates books by British and British resident Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) writers. Afropean describes Johny’s quest to find “black Europe from the street up”.
He will be speaking to Dr Golding, Diversity Champion in the School of Human and Health Sciences, at 19:00 GMT on 24 March, and will also be taking questions from the audience. Visit the Eventbrite page to register for the event.

Johny co-presents Open Book on BBC Radio 4, and he has presented on MTV, BBC and ITV1. He also contributes to publications including The Guardian and the New York Times, while his photography exhibition Afropean: Travels in Black Europe was at Foam in Amsterdam in 2020.
Broaden My Bookshelf is an initiative to increase the range of books in the University's library written by people from a BAME background, and also books by and about LGBT+ people.
