Huddersfield Business School
Dr Alexandros Nikitas is a Reader in Smart Transport and is Deputy Director of Huddersfield Business School’s Behavioural Research Centre. He is also co-investigator of the University’s European Structural and Investment Funds project and the lead of a flagship REF Impact Case for the forthcoming REF 2021 dealing with Active Transportation in Greece and Beyond. Dr Nikitas has produced more than 80 papers and conference outputs in his career thus far and is currently conducting research regarding the societal importance of sustainable mobility and autonomous, connected, shared and digitised transport.
On Monday 5th July 2021, Dr Alexandros Nikitas was selected by transport academics from institutions across the UK and Ireland to be the forthcoming Chair of the Universities’ Transport Study Group (UTSG) Executive Committee. Dr Nikitas will lead the premier transport research and teaching group in the UK and Ireland including 60 academic institution members such as Cambridge, Oxford, University College London, Imperial, Loughborough, Trinity College Dublin, Leeds and Southampton to name just a few. In addition to the UK and Ireland membership over 70 academic institutions are represented on its list of overseas correspondents, whilst the UTSG emails have thousands of recipients globally on a daily basis.
Dr Alexandros Nikitas is already a member of the UTSG and is currently shadowing the Chair before starting his position in July 2022. Dr Nikitas will hold his position for three years and has intentions of bringing the annual UTSG conference, previously attended by over 150 delegates, to Huddersfield in 2024 or 2025. This leadership role will offer excellent visibility for Huddersfield Business School and contributes to the School’s KPIs in research, teaching, KEF and internationalisation areas. It will also support the wider transport initiatives across the University and provide a door-opener for sponsors such as Department for Transport, Economic and Social Research Council and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
To be appointed as Chair of the Universities’ Transport Study Group is the highest honour for a transport academic in the UK; a truly prestigious and University recognised post.
