Speaker: Dr. Jo Deakin, Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Criminal Justice, University of Manchester
Seminar title: Once in trouble always in trouble: 'Risky' youth and the reproduction of stigma
Date: 5.00-6.00pm, Thursday 3 October 2019
Location: Ramsden Building, R1/12

Seminar outline:

This seminar focuses on the experiences of young people labelled as 'risky' as they attempt to navigate stigmatised identities.  Drawing on case study data from the PROMISE* project, the analysis sets out a conceptual framework within which young people's experiences and responses can be understood. Framed within a theoretical understanding of stigma as a construct of power, this seminar considers the components and cyclical process of stigma, its role in shaping policies of social control, and its consequences for groups of 'risky' young people. Central to the analysis are young people's narratives, drawn out using arts-based elicitation methods, of the multiple types and sites of stigma.

About the speaker:

Dr Jo Deakin is Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Manchester. Jo's research areas are youth justice, social exclusion, desistance and social control. Her most recent project, PROMISE, was a European Commission Horizon 2020 study of 'youth in conflict with authority' across Europe.

Jo has a particular interest in participatory research, engaging vulnerable and hard to reach groups at all stages of her projects, including pioneering a peer-research method with young migrant men, and using arts-based methods and mixed-media to disseminate findings and increase impact with policy makers, stakeholders and young people. Jo is an active member of the British Society of Criminology and the Howard League for Penal Reform.
