Students at The Law School in the University of Huddersfield have spent this year taking part in The LawWorks and Advocate Law School Challenge as a way of raising money for both charities as well as supporting the facilitation of free legal advice and raising awareness of the services available. Funds raised allow LawWorks and Advocate to connect solicitors and barristers volunteering their time and expertise with people in need who otherwise would not be able to afford it. Students taking part must hone their fundraising and organisational skills to develop and implement several fundraising activities in order to earn as many donations as they can.
The Law School students have held a series of events, including a Great Gatsby themed ball which took place in the Oastler building on Wednesday 6th March. The event included a charity auction and raffle, sourcing all prizes from local business. Guests were given the opportunity to learn about the importance of each charity and understand what project that their donations would be going towards. Over 60 students and guests attended the themed night making the evening a great success. In addition to the ball, events also included an Easter bake sale and Valentine’s day bake sale.
The Law School students have done remarkably well this year and through their hard work in planning and hosting a range of activities, raised by amounting a total of £2,149. This is a tremendous outcome for our students, and surpassed the previous year’s fundraising total.
Gold, silver and bronze awards are given out to teams that managed to raise £2,000, £1,000 and £500. As a result of surpassing £2,000, our students are proud to have claimed a gold award for their outstanding efforts.
Overall, University of Huddersfield students finished in third place with Liverpool John Moores University winning first place and the University of Leeds coming in second. Congratulations to all involved in this fantastic achievement.
