Players of the world’s most famous board game now have a chance to learn all about Huddersfield – especially if they land on the square occupied by our award-winning university. And MR MONOPOLY himself is to have a guided tour of the campus, where he will pose for selfies with student fans!
The Huddersfield edition of MONOPOLY is to be unveiled at a special event on Friday 19 October at the John Smith’s Stadium. The design and layout of the board is kept under wraps until then, but some of the district’s leading landmarks will be featured, including the University, represented by a picture of the Oastler Building.
Also, one of the community chest cards awarded to players as they navigate the MONOPOLY board reads: “You’re awarded a scholarship to study at the University of Huddersfield. Collect M200”.
Huddersfield was included in the MONOPOLY special edition range after it scooped more votes than neighbouring Halifax in an online poll. When the new version of the game is launched on Friday, the top-hatted MR MONOPOLY himself will preside, and he has a stopover in town so that he can visit the University campus on Saturday.
Students will have a chance to pose with him for selfies and when they are posted on social media a panel of judges will choose the best and award a free copy of the Huddersfield edition of MONOPOLY to the winner.
It is hoped that the local version of the board game will be a lively way to introduce students from the UK and overseas to the landmarks of the historic town, and that Huddersfield MONOPOLY sets could also serve as souvenirs of time spent studying at the University.
The game will be on sale in the Students' Union shop on Saturday 20 October.
