Cyberpsychology Research Network PhD Fee-Waivers

The prolific growth of technology has engendered a plethora of next-generation media and communication platforms (e.g. Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok) that facilitate technology-supported interactions between individuals across the globe. In line with views on the need to further investigate the psychological phenomena that emerge as a result of the human interaction with digital technology, and the need to develop a research network that can facilitate such expertise, Professor Maria Ioannou and Dr Calli Tzani established the Cyberpsychology Research Network (CRN). The CRN brings together international and national academics and researchers, who acquire recognized expertise and experience in the impact of the technological evolution in the cyber environment, including social media. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop their research, but also gain career-enhancing teaching experience and teaching-related skills.

Proposals are invited in the following areas:

• Online human behaviour.
• Psychological impact of the utilization of social media.
• Online interactions.
• Online deviant behaviour.
• Online communities.
• Online interpersonal relationships.
• Internet-facilitated personas.
• Offline impact of online actions.

Transitional integration of online behaviour to offline behaviour.

Funding information

The PhD fee waivers will cover full tuition fees at UK rate and provide the opportunity to apply for funding to support attendance at research-related conferences. Fee-waivers will be awarded through an open competition to applicants wishing to commence full-time PhD studies in January 2026 and will be renewable annually for up to 3 years, subject to satisfactory research progress. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute an average of 6 hours per week to teaching and teaching-related activities.

Students who are unable to complete their studies are required to refund the fee-waiver awarded.

Eligibility

This research opportunity is open to home (UK resident) candidates only.  Candidates should already hold a First Class Honours Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (UK or UK equivalent). 2:1 will be considered if other achievements can exhibit academic and/or practical excellency.

The ideal applicant would normally be expected to pursue an academic career and be willing to disseminate research outcomes in high quality international academic journals and conferences, and to engage with policy through external grants applications. They will be positioned within the CRN and supported by a research active staff and PGRs that are members of the Network.

Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Scheme

If you’re a Huddersfield graduate, looking to undertake a full- or part-time research degree, you may be eligible for a full fee-waiver on your research degree.

Please note: this scholarship scheme is open to home and international applicants. However, for our international students, the scheme will provide a fee-waiver of at least 50% on full- or part-time research degrees. Some schools may offer 100% but this is not guaranteed.

Eligibility criteria 

Our Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Scheme is a competitive application process and to be eligible, you must have achieved one of the following:

• a first-class honours degree or
• a distinction at taught Master’s or
• be recommended based on your Master’s by Research by your supervisor and academic school and
• have graduated from the University of Huddersfield in the last three years.  

Any offer will be conditional on your degree outcome if you are graduating in the current academic year.  

More information about the scheme

• The scheme is available for research undertaken on a full- or part-time basis including PhD, Master of Arts by Research, and Master of Science by Research
• The scholarship is only available for the standard registration period only. The fee-waiver will not apply to any research undertaken outside of this standard registration period, including any write up period
• For doctoral awards, or PhDs, the fee waiver will be for 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time
• For Master’s by Research awards, the fee-waiver will be for 1-year full time or 2 years part time

Chancellor’s Scholarships

To celebrate 200 years of the University of Huddersfield, which in 1825 was established as The Science and Mechanics Institute, we are awarding Chancellor’s Anniversary Scholarships across all PhD disciplines.

We are seeking the very best graduates from across the UK to participate in our Chancellor’s Scholarships Scheme, which gives those selected access to a full tuition fee-waiver on their research degree, as well as additional funds to attend national and international conferences to share and publish their research.

Eligibility criteria

Our Chancellor’s Anniversary Scholarships Scheme is a competitive application process open to home (UK resident) candidates. To be eligible you must have achieved one of the following:

• a 2:1 honours degree or above or
• a Distinction at taught Master’s or
• a Master’s by Research degree and have a letter of recommendation from your supervisor

These scholarships are available across all academic disciplines for research degrees undertaken on either a full- or part-time basis. Research degrees include the following awards; PhD, Professional Doctorates, Master’s of Arts by Research, and Master’s of Science by Research.
