Why did you choose to study at the University of Huddersfield?
I chose to study at Huddersfield because it was located in the Yorkshire region and it wasn’t too far from my family home. Also, my college tutors Woody and Shaun graduated from here and told me that the University had a good reputation, as well as high-quality music studios, equipment and facilities – some of the best in the UK.
How did you find the experience of returning to study as a mature student?
I found the experience of returning to study after a break as a mature student a little challenging, but I successfully passed an adult Access to HE course, where we spent a lot of time in class talking about higher education and what to expect.
I would definitely recommend the University of Huddersfield to other mature students, simply because on campus we have a mixture of students of various different age ranges, cultures and ethnicities. This means that there are a good mix of students to interact and collaborate with, and that you’ll find students who share similar characteristics to you, such as being a similar age or having a shared interest.

"The resources, facilities and learning spaces have provided me with space for growth and networking with other music production professionals and students from all around the world."
What would you say to prospective students thinking of studying at Huddersfield?
I believe that the University of Huddersfield is a really good university. I came here only knowing the basics of desktop production, rather than the creative and professional music production skills. Throughout my time at Huddersfield I have been able to develop the creative and technical skills needed for a career in music production.
Tell us about the support you have received through the Hardship Fund?
The Hardship Fund has helped me pay for my necessities such as technology for my studies and general living costs, at times where I have been struggling with my finances.
How have you got involved with student life at Huddersfield?
I have got involved in student life at Huddersfield by always attending free and paid events that are run by the various student societies that I am in such as creative writing society, musical theatre, movies and TV societies. I really enjoy going to the events that they run.
I also joined the wrestling society for a while, which was really good. I’m looking forward to trying out more societies like this. There’s so much going on, on campus, that it really feels like High School Musical on campus sometimes.

"I would say come to Huddersfield if you’re serious about education, innovation and having fun!"
What are your thoughts on the student accommodation in Huddersfield?
I find living in student accommodation very calm. It’s affordable, there’s additional facilities to help me relax after a long day sitting through lectures and talks.
Every accommodation has its own unique theme and original architectural designs, so it was fun when searching for accommodation as a lot of them were really nice and quirky. The free gym access for students is an added bonus too. On top of that, the staff team are very helpfully and polite.

What support have you received from our Enterprise Team?
I have created an independent record label Gawthorpe Ting Music, Content & Entertainment, and I am working on expanding our services, with the help of other artists in the local area.
Through the University’s Enterprise Team, I have received a broader understanding of what I need to do in terms of my record label ideas. For example, they gave me advice on my business plan. Through working with the team, I now know what I must focus on, which is narrowing my brainstorming ideas down and spending more time on the idea until completion and/or success.
