Meet Harold the Humanoid Robot

This is Harold, the University of Huddersfield’s Humanoid Robot, who was acquired by the institution to support teaching, learning and pioneering research. Harold, a Unitree G1 robot, is an integral part of the work Professor John Murray, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning), is undertaking in the field of assisted living technologies, with a particular focus on programming and human-robot interaction.

Harold, named after Huddersfield-born former Prime Minister Harold Wilson, is also playing a key role in the University’s new Institute for Applied Artificial Intelligence, which has been set up to explore how AI can be developed and deployed responsibly to make our working lives more efficient. He is helping explore how robotics and AI can transform lives and shape the future of healthcare and independent living.

In between research projects Harold has become something of a charismatic ambassador for the University and a social media and media star, with recent appearances at a science festival at The Deep in Hull, presenting the match-ball at a Huddersfield Giants game, as well as opening the show on ITV’s This Morning programme.
