Exploring the jobs market is challenge facing all students, especially in tough economic times. A big help in the quest is a major careers fair taking place at the University on Wednesday 4 November.
Some 30 firms and organisations will be present, including manufacturers, retailers and public sector employers. Some are looking to recruit and there will be also be opportunities for students to seek work placements and voluntary work – Autumn Careers Fair - full details.
Meanwhile, one of the world’s top oil companies has been prospecting for student talent, and, as before, it has tapped into the resources of the University of Huddersfield.
A well-established relationship between the University and the Texas-based multi-national Cameron has received a further boost with a visit to Huddersfield by some of the company’s top executives.
Cameron, who will also be exhibiting at the University’s autumn careers fair, is one of the global leaders in building and operating pipelines for gas and oil. It has an office in Leeds and over the years many University of Huddersfield students, in subjects such as engineering, business and marketing, have had work placements with the company.
Several of the University’s graduates have gone on to work for the company, taking part in a globe-trotting training process that involves stints at Cameron’s Houston HQ and in Far East locations. Also, Cameron has sponsored students during their studies at Huddersfield and the company’s staff have had input into the content of some courses.
When Clare Thompson, who is the Human Resources Partner for Cameron at its Leeds office, told University’s Head of Careers Stephen Boyd that top Cameron executives were coming to the UK and asked if they could visit the University, he was quick to take up the opportunity.
A day of interviews, discussions and presentations was arranged for the team from Texas – Joe Mongrain, who is Cameron’s Vice President with responsibility for Human Resources, and John Watson, who is Director of Global Talent Acquisition. Also, the company’s Vice President for Development and Technology, John Bartos, took part in discussions via a live conference call link from Houston.
Several Huddersfield academics gave presentations highlighting the vast array of opportunities that exist for collaborative research and development.
“The visit was a big success and a reflection of the relationship between the University and Cameron,” said Stephen Boyd. “I am now confident that the link will be strengthened further and that the multi-national will be keen to recruit many more Huddersfield graduates, as part of what we hope will become a wider long-term sustainable partnership.”
