About the course
This is a conversion Master's course and is ideal if you have not previously studied business or management and want to develop your knowledge and skills in these professional areas. It is particularly suitable for students from non-business subject areas who are intending to work in a business organisation and who would like to acquire professional management skills. You will cover most of the core areas of business including marketing, finance, operations, people management and strategy. There are also a wide range of options available to tailor study towards marketing specific areas of interest.

The entry requirements for this course are normally one of the following:
• A good Honours degree (2:2 or above) in any subject (normally not a business-related subject)
• An equivalent professional qualification.
• Admission will be given to practising managers with relevant experience and academic potential to achieve the award on an exceptional basis.
• If English is not your first language, you are expected to demonstrate English language ability at a level equivalent to IELTs 6.0 (TOEFL 550 or Computer Based 213) before commencing your studies.

Core modules: Autumn term:
+ Marketing Management
The course is structured to give you a theoretical and practical understanding of managerial marketing decision making. You will be introduced to general marketing concepts and the techniques and tools of market analysis required for developing and implementing effective marketing strategies. The module is highly practical in nature and is assessed through two individual pieces of coursework.
+ Finance for Managers
This module enables you to develop an understanding of the purposes and uses of financial information, together with the ability to use quantitative skills to improve performance management and decision making within an organisation.
+ Professional Skills
The module provides students with a theoretical framework for analysing their professional skills and students will have to reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses. This assessment will then form the baseline from which to develop a plan for their own professional development during their period of studies. Students will need to demonstrate that they have developed new skills and competences over the duration of the module through a portfolio.

+ Strategic Management
This module provides students with a substantial body of knowledge relating to the principles of strategic management in particular the two broad areas of techniques for analysing organisations and their environments and the identification of appropriate strategic choices. The students will be encouraged to practice analyses and strategic designs throughout the delivery of the module. The module is assessed an individual assignment of 1500 words and three hours in-class test.
+ Managing People in Organisations (F/T)
Managing People in Organisations is an extremely practical module which introduces critically analyses and evaluates key elements of Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour to enable effective deployment of people within organisations. A strategic exploration of the global context within which people work and are managed is also carried out through a range of organisational behaviour concepts and theories.
The assessment for this module is a 5000 word analytical report based upon an Organisational Case Study provided (worth 100% of module marks).

All students will be required to undertake a final major piece of integrative work relating to their subject area.
There are two routes that you may choose:
+ Research Methods and Techniques
This module is a designed to prepare you for your Dissertation. The module covers issues such as choosing your topic, how to find out what is already known about your area of interest and qualitative and quantitative research design. The module is assessed through the completion of a literature review and proposal for your dissertation. You will be supported both by the module team and an individually assigned supervisor.
+ Postgraduate Dissertation
Students are required to conduct an in-depth piece of individual research on a topic of their own choice in an approved domain. It is expected that the student will select a research topic which corresponds to his/her own particular interests and thus allows him/her to develop a more specialised knowledge and understanding of this area. The Dissertation will involve review of the literature, research design, appropriate data collection and data analysis. The Dissertation will also drawn conclusions and make recommendations where appropriate. The interpretation and evaluation of the findings to be reported to a high professional standard. Assessment will be through the presentation of a dissertation on a topic relevant to the degree course, normally of the order of no less than 15,000 and no more than 20,000 words.

You will also have a choice of two option modules from:
+ International Marketing
The international marketing modules focuses on the key decisions to be made by organisations when considering operating in international markets - whether to go international, which markets to select, how to enter the market and how to develop marketing programmes for the target market. This will be supported by study of the international environment and international and global customers.
+ Public Relations and Sponsorship Management
In this module you will consider the key issues and processes involved in public relations and sponsorship. This will be presented in the context of current theory, techniques, and practices. In addition the contribution made by public relations and sponsorship to the overall marketing communications strategy will be examined. The module is assessed through an individual coursework and an exam.
+ Strategic Brand Management
This module aims to allow students to develop a critical understanding of the strategic importance of brands and branding in an increasingly internationalised and globalised business environment. It is designed to provide a systematic understanding of how strategic decisions are made to build strong and successful brands.
+ Direct and Relationship Marketing
This module specialises in direct and relationship marketing. The assessment is firstly by an individual assignment looking at the theories/concepts of direct and relationship marketing.
The second assessment is a group project, set by the Institute of Direct Marketing (IDM), in conjunction with a business. If successful, your campaign may be entered into the IDM National Competition. One of our one of our previous team entries won the Silver prize in this competition. You can also sit the IDM exam gaining an extra professional qualification.
The highlight of this course is the opportunity for you to study and research a topic area of your choice, either in the form of a dissertation or do an Applied Consultancy Project. This will allow you to get real work experience and familiarise themselves with the work environment. Previous students have based their dissertations or projects on topics related to their chosen career. Professional Skills in addition to Dissertation and Applied Consultancy Project aim to get you engaged with the practical application of management theory which consequently enhance your personal skills.

Marketing knowledge is essential in the private sector and increasingly important in public sector jobs. Combined with your management skills, this course enables you to offer future employers a strong portfolio of skills.
Teaching and assessment
We use a range of teaching and learning approaches to help you develop your knowledge and skills; including seminars, tutorials, lectures and case studies. Modules have different teaching and assessment strategies, some modules are based on individual work and others on group work. Many aspects of teaching and assessment are grounded in real life situations and, where possible, live projects are incorporated into the teaching. You will also get the opportunity to engage with professionals and consultant guest speakers who are members of the Strategic Planning Society (SPS).

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results. Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

How much will it cost me?
In 2016/17, the tuition fee for UK and EU postgraduate students at the University of Huddersfield will generally be £4,950 (see Fees and Finance for exceptions). Interim Awards A Master's course is 180 Master's level credits, which would normally take one calendar year full-time study. Interim awards are available at Postgraduate Certificate level or Postgraduate Diploma level should you decide to exit the course early.
