Student development opportunities

Our students take part in lots of development opportunities. We hold regular mooting competitions for our students. Mooting gives Law students the chance to see what it is like to advocate in court arguing for either the appellant or respondent. The process consists of researching the legal issues, drafting up a court bundle, and presenting arguments against an opposing counsel before a judge who will rule at the end based on the legal issues, quality of individual skills, and the best team overall.

Our students get to attend careers fairs and mentoring events where they get to meet with law practitioners to seek career advice and find out about opportunities. The Law Fair takes place every year and is open to students from all years on all law courses. The professional mentoring scheme supports our third and fourth year students to navigate the transition from University into practice. These events are a great way to network with employers and learn about what it’s like to work in law at a wide range of organisations and businesses.

What our graduates say

Changes to legal education and training

The routes to qualification as a barrister or solicitor as recently been reviewed. Both the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Bar Standards (BSB) no longer require the study of a 'Qualifying Law Degree' (QLD), however, the study of what is referred to as the 'seven legal foundations of knowledge' is still required prior to the vocational stage of bar training. All our undergraduate law degrees meet this requirement.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has introduced the Solicitors Qualifying Examination route to qualification. This route requires a degree in any subject or equivalent level 6 qualification.
