Biography

I am a Senior Lecturer in Music Technology and Production and the leader of the Applied Psychoacoustics Lab (APL) at the University of Huddersfield. I teach acoustics/psychoacoustics, recording techniques, research methods and audio signal processing. My research primarily concerns the modelling of perceptual mechanisms for various auditory attributes in relation to sound recording and reproduction, and the development of “perceptually motivated” new music technology algorithms. Recent projects include the developments of interactive and 3D microphone array techniques, perceptually motivated time and level panning methods, and the investigation into the perception of 3D sound. I am currently undertaking an EPSRC-funded research project “Perceptual rendering of vertical image width for 3D multichannel audio” as Principal Investigator, and supervising various post-graduate research projects on auditory perception and psychoacoustic engineering (see Research Degree Supervision). 

Before joining Huddersfield in 2010, I was a Senior Research Engineer at LG Electronics in South Korea. I led a project to develop audio post-processing algorithms for LG mobile phones and actively participated in the standardisations of new MPEG audio codecs.

I graduated from the music and sound recording (Tonmeister) course at the University of Surrey in 2002. During the course I spent my placement year as an assistant engineer at Metropolis studios in London. I gained my PhD from the same university in 2006. My PhD research was concerned with the subjective effects and objective measurements of interchannel crosstalk in multichannel microphone techniques. 

I am also an experienced freelance sound engineer/producer working in a wide range of musical genres, including classical, jazz and rock. My speciality is stereo and surround acoustic recording using microphones. 

Outside the University work, I am an active member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES). I am a member of the AES Technical Council, and a regular reviewer of the AES journal. I am also serving as an Editorial Board Member for the AES/Focal Press book series.

Research & Scholarship

I am leading a group of researchers at the Applied Psychoacoustics Lab (APL), which is equipped with an ITU-R BS.1116-compliant critical listening room, and professional quality 3D multichannel recording and reproduction systems. My primary research interest is in spatial audio psychoacoustics, focusing on the mechanisms of how humans perceive different types of sounds in real and reproduction environments, and how they could be exploited to develop new audio technologies. My research involves listening tests, statistical data analysis, objective measurements of auditory parameters, and digital audio signal processing. 

The ultimate goal of my research is to develop new recording and rendering methods for next-generation audio technologies such as 3D multichannel audio, object-based audio and automated mixing/mastering. 

I am currently undertaking an EPSRC-funded project “Perceptual rendering of vertical image width for 3D multichannel audio” as Principal Investigator. Outputs from the project will provide fundamental psychoacoustic understandings of how to render the vertical spread of sound image between vertically arranged loudspeakers, and also become the basis for the development of a new 2D to 3D upmixing algorithm.
