Biography

Dr Hyunkook Lee is a Senior Lecturer in Music Technology and Production and the leader of the Applied Psychoacoustics Lab (APL) at the University of Huddersfield. He joined Huddersfield in 2010 and actively developed research in spatial audio psychoacoustics as well as developing undergraduate modules such as Acoustics and Concert Hall Recording. Dr Lee is currently undertaking an EPSRC-funded research project “Perceptual rendering of vertical image width for 3D multichannel audio” as Principal Investigator. He has also undertaken a number of consultancy works for companies such as Samsung Electronics, Volvo Car and Bridgewater Hall.

Before joining Huddersfield, Hyunkook was a Senior Research Engineer at LG Electronics in South Korea. He led a project to develop audio post-processing algorithms for LG mobile phones and participated in MPEG audio codec standardisation activities, contributing to the developments of codecs such as SAOC and USAC.

Hyunkook graduated from the music and sound recording (Tonmeister) course at the University of Surrey in 2002. During the course he spent my placement year as an assistant engineer at Metropolis studios in London. He gained his PhD from the same university in 2006. His PhD research was concerned with the subjective effects and objective measurements of interchannel crosstalk in multichannel microphone techniques. 

He is also an experienced freelance sound engineer/producer working in a wide range of musical genres, including classical, jazz and rock.

Research and Scholarship

Hyunkook’s research primarily concerns the modelling of perceptual mechanisms for various auditory attributes in relation to sound recording and reproduction, and the development of “perceptually motivated” new music technology algorithms. Recent projects include the developments of interactive 3D microphone array techniques, 2D to 3D upmixing methods, and perceptually motivated virtual acoustics algorithm for virtual reality applications.

He is currently undertaking an EPSRC-funded research project “Perceptual rendering of vertical image width for 3D multichannel audio” as Principal Investigator.

He is currently supervising 3 PhD and 1 MRes research projects concerned with spatial audio perception, multichannel 3D sound and virtual acoustics.

Teaching/Research interests:

He teaches acoustics/psychoacoustics, audio signal processing, concert hall and location recording and research method. 

His research interests include modelling the perceptual mechanisms of spatial audio attributes, developing new multichannel 3D sound recording and processing systems, and developing binaural audio processing algorithms for virtual reality applications.

He is currently supervising 3 PhD and 1 MRes research projects concerned with spatial audio perception, multichannel 3D sound and virtual acoustics.
