Before embarking on an academic career, John worked in fairtrade at Oxfam for a number of years. He previously worked in Cities Research Centre at UWE in Bristol and in the School of Geography and Planning at Cardiff University, where his research focused on sustainable communities and sustainable food systems.
John is on the editorial board of Human Figurations, the peer reviewed journal of the Norbert Elias Foundation. He has conducted peer review for the National Science Foundation in the US and for the journals Sociology, Sustainability, Journal of Rural Studies, Geoforum, Agriculture and Human Values, Food Policy, International Food and Agribusiness Management Review, and International Journal of Sociology of Food and Agriculture, amongst others.
John's teaching has a specific focus on sustainable food systems/ communities and environmental policy at both UG and PG level. He is a member of the Centre for Sustainable and Resilient Communities and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). John also works as a research consultant (see Esteem and Enterprise Activities).

My current research interests revolve around food (particularly the meat industry), communities and sustainability.

John is on the editorial board of Human Figurations, the peer reviewed journal of the Norbert Elias Foundation. He has conducted peer review for the National Science Foundation in the US and for the journals Sociology, Agriculture and Human Values, Food Policy, International Food and Agribusiness Management Review (US), International Journal of Sociology of Food and Agriculture, Journal of Rural Studies, and Geoforum, amongst others. Following similar research in Leeds, Leicester, Glasgow and Birmingham, John's work on destitution in the asylum system in Bradford contributed evidence for the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee on Asylum 2013-2014.
Research Degree Supervision
John is currently supervising two PhD students and welcomes enquiries from students wishing to pursue doctoral studies in these three areas:
1) Local food systems, partnership working and sustainable development in the food industry.
2) Responsible farm animal welfare management and sustainability.
3) Emerging markets for religiously certified food products (broadly defined and could include and be related to international migration).
Since 2010, John has worked as a research consultant and he has been commissioned to conduct research and consultancy for a number of public and third sector organisations.
John oversees the undergraduate business dissertation module.
Teaching and Professional Activities
