Applications for 2021 are now closed. We will contact all applicants if the situation requires us to make any adjustments to your start date.

We have a wide range of courses available in January 2022 and September 2022. You can find and apply for these courses using Coursefinder.

Unable to make the conditions of your offer

You must meet all your conditions, including deposit payment before we can issue your CAS. If you cannot meet your conditions or you are unsure about attending the University of Huddersfield you can defer to the next intake, to do this you can contact your School Support Office or your Regional Office or email the International Office.

IELTS Alternatives

The University accepts a range of English language qualifications for evidence of your English language abilities. Many of these tests can be taken up to two years ago. Please see below.

If you do not hold one of the qualifications below you can also consider our online Pre-Sessional English course which accepts a variety of entry qualifications. At the end of the Pre-Sessional programme, if you have passed the course you would be able to come to the UK without taking an IELTS test.

Course Deposits & Refunds

You will still need to provide a tuition fee deposit if this is a condition on your offer letter before we can provide you with an unconditional offer and enrol you on to your course. However, if you're unable to attend due to coronavirus, you'll receive a full refund of your deposit.

I need to apply for my student visa in my country, are the Visa Application Centres (VACs) open?

Visa application centres have started to reopen across the world. To ensure you always have the most up to date information on which VACs are open, please check your specific country using the following two websites:

What happens if I cannot get my visa or a flight in time for the start of my course?

VACs may be busy so there may be some delays in processing your visa. Please apply in good time to allow plenty of time to get your visa. We do understand that it may be difficult to arrive in time for the start of your course this year. If you think that you are going to arrive late this year, please contact your school to let them know.

When I get my visa, how much time will I have to come to the UK?

Your student visa will look like a sticker in your passport. This is called a vignette and it will be valid for 90 days. This means that you will have 90 days to come to the UK.

How do I collect my BRP when I arrive in the UK?

Your BRP is your Biometric Residence Permit and it is the next part of your visa. You will need to collect it from the Post Office when you come to the UK. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept deliveries of BRPs to the university this year.

When you make your visa application, you must say that you will be collecting your BRP from the Post Office. Please see our step-by-step guide on how to make a visa application and it will tell you what you need to put on the form.
 

Will I have to self-isolate upon arrival in the UK?

Nationals of most countries will be required to self-isolate for the first 10 days after arriving in the UK. You will need to self-isolate in your UK accommodation e.g. student accommodation. Your accommodation provider may be able to help by providing deliveries of food and other essentials.

How to self-isolate when you travel to the UK

You must also provide your UK flight and UK address detail to the Home Office before traveling to the UK. You can do this by completing this online form.

Nationals of some countries are exempt from the self-isolation requirements. This list can be found at the UK government web page.

Please note that this list can change anytime, so it is important that you double check before traveling.

How can I collect my BRP within 10 days of my arrival in the UK if I am in self-isolation?

Student visa holders are usually required to collect their BRP from a UK post office within 10 days of arrival but the UKVI understands that self-isolation means this is not possible so this requirement has been relaxed.

You should attempt to collect your BRP as soon as the 10 day self-isolation period has ended for you.

As soon as you have collected your BRP please take a photograph of both sides of the card and email these through to the Immigration Team at the University of Huddersfield on ACL@hud.ac.uk. This is because we are required by the UKVI to keep copies of your immigration permission to study.

How will I enrol at the university this year?

Students will not be required to enrol in person due to social distancing on campus, you will be enrolled online. We will still need to check your visa and BRP but the UKVI have allowed us to do this electronically this year.

This means that when you arrive in the UK, you MUST send us a copy of your vignette that will have been stamped when you entered the UK. We will not be able to issue your campus card without seeing this so it is very important that you send a copy to ACL@hud.ac.uk as soon as you arrive in the UK.

Once you have collected your BRP from the Post Office, please send us a copy of BOTH sides of your card.

How can I register with the police when I’m in self-isolation?

Nationals of some countries are required to register with the police within seven days of arriving in the UK. However, due to the current social distancing requirements in the UK, police registration is suspended until further notice.

Is there any more information on the new Graduate Route (Post-Study Work) visa?

The Home Office have confirmed that the scheme will be available to Tier 4 and Student visa international students who have completed a degree in the UK from summer 2021. If students are required to start a new course through blended learning due to Covid-19, they will still be eligible to switch into the Graduate route on a concessionary basis. Students will benefit from this concession if they enter the UK before 6 April 2021 and complete their course in the UK. Students would need to meet all other requirements of the route.

The scheme will allow PhD students to stay in the UK for up to three years after they complete their course while students who complete a Bachelor or a Masters degree will be able to stay for two years.

Our Regional Offices are still open, and you can contact them by phone or email.

We will also be running webinars in different countries and subject areas and so please keep checking your emails and our website for details.

How we are getting ready

We are excited to fully open our state-of-the-art campus and deliver classes face to face from September 2021.

All our welcome week activities are planned to go ahead without restrictions as will timetabled on-campus classes such as workshops, practical sessions, seminars and project work. All of this will be supported with online materials and tutorials.

We will continue to follow Government guidance about keeping the campus Covid-secure so our plans are of course subject to change, so please check this page regularly for updates.

What will teaching be like

We have moved large lectures online using video conferencing with face-to-face delivery of some seminars, tutorials and laboratory work which will take place in smaller groups. After you have been enrolled your school support office will give you your timetable and induction details.

You will be given details of safety requirements before coming on to campus. You can find more details and some useful videos of what this will be like on our COVID-19 FAQ page.

 

What do you need to bring to study?

Because some of your classes will be online you will need to make sure that you bring a laptop computer with you that you are able to use to access any on-line content over the internet. In many cases it will probably be cheaper to buy a laptop in your home country and bring this with you.

You will be able to access all the University library resources online and we will also provide you with any software you need such as Microsoft 365 or specialist software for your course if you need to access these remotely.

Is it safe in Huddersfield

Huddersfield is a small town and based on information from Public Health England, Huddersfield has had very low levels of Covid-19 infections compared to many other areas and the large cities in the UK.

What will I be able to do outside of Class?

Our library and social spaces have rules in place so that you can access them safely, and our Students’ Union is also open to introduce you to its wide range of societies and clubs.

Travelling to the UK

The UK Government has implemented a traffic light system for all arrivals to the UK. The current rules are as follows:

• All arrivals will be required to complete a pre-departure test, complete a passenger locator form and book a travel test package and have proof of a negative COVID-19 test to travel to England.
• Green country arrivals will not have to self-isolate on arrival, and their travel test package will only include a test on day 2, rather than days 2&8 as has been the policy so far.
• Amber country arrivals will be required to self-isolate in their own accommodation, and their travel test package will include a test on both days 2&8.
• Red country arrivals will be required to quarantine in a managed quarantine hotel, and their travel test package will include a test on both days 2&8. If you’re required to quarantine in a managed quarantine hotel you can only arrive in England at certain ports of entry. Currently, these are:
  • Heathrow Airport
  • Gatwick Airport
  • London City Airport
  • Birmingham Airport
  • Bristol Airport
  • Farnborough Airport
  • Biggin Hill Airport
  Other ports of entry may be added in the future but please note that Manchester or Leeds airport are not currently on the list.
  The Home Office concession on online study for students who have a visa still runs out on 27 September. This means all students from red list countries who wish to study in September will need to be in the UK and enrol as normal, not study online.It is expected that students from red list countries should attend classes face to face classes in Huddersfield from September. Students will need to factor this into their planning around quarantine and booking flights.Please see the government guidelines for more information.

What should I do about Accommodation?

We suggest that you carefully consider your accommodation choice and look in detail at the terms and conditions of any contract that you may be considering taking out with an accommodation provider. Most accommodation is close to the University, has good internet access and is convenient for food shopping.

If you need help and support with accommodation please visit our accommodation page for information from the DIGS office or alternatively you can email HudLets (hudlets@hud.ac.uk) within our Students’ Union who can help with contracts and further advice. Please make sure you have WiFi availability as part of your accommodation contract so you can ensure you can access your University work online when needed.

What if I am worried about making it to the UK in time? 

Term will start on 11 January 2021. It is important that you try to travel to the UK as soon as possible.
You may need to self isolate when you arrive in the UK depending on where you are from and so you will be able to access some of your lecture content online whilst in self isolation.

If you are worried about arriving late please contact your School Support Office or your Regional Office. You can defer to your next intake.

From 4 January 2021 you will receive an email confirmation of your online enrolment with instructions to activate your University IT account. You will be given an online ‘Quick-Start Guide’ to help you understand your new IT account and access to an online 'University Induction module' (available from 11 January) that will welcome you and introduce you to all you need to know.

You will need to go to the International Office in the Student Central Building to collect your student ID card. You must bring your passport, evidence of your local UK address and a face covering and you must have completed your period of self isolation.

All three steps of pre-enrolment must be completed on our online portal - MyHud - and must be done before you can enrol at the University and start your research. Please make sure you have your unconditional offer before completing this. You will receive an email with a link to MyHud when you have your Unconditional Offer.

Step 1 is open now. This is where you will upload your photograph for your student ID card in jpeg format. If this is not done we cannot enrol you after step 3.

Steps 2 and 3 are now open. You must update your term-time address and personal details including email and mobile number. Please take time to carefully read and complete these steps as all information is very important. We cannot enrol you until this is completed.

Log in to MyHud and enter your unique username and password:

Username: This is your Student Number, for example u1234567.
Password: This is your date of birth (use this format ddmmmyy for example: 01jan00 or 19feb98). This is case sensitive.

Late arrival/deferral
If you are worried about arriving late please contact your School Support Office or your Regional Office. You can defer to your next intake.

Accommodation
If you need help and support with accommodation please visit our accommodation page to find out more about our recommended providers. We strongly recommend that you live in Huddersfield, if you live more than a one hour commute away your enrolment could be denied.

Self Isolation

When you arrive in the UK, you must travel directly to the place you are staying and not leave until 10 days have passed since you were last in a non-exempt country or territory. This is known as ‘self-isolating’. It is really important that during this time, you do not leave your accommodation to come to campus or to go shopping.

If you need to collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) from the post office, you must again wait for your 10-day self-isolation to be completed.

Your accommodation will have information on the steps that they are taking to support students who are self-isolating and it is important that you let them know as soon as possible when you arrive so that they can give you this advice. 

Currently, people travelling to the UK have to show proof of a negative Covid-19 test before setting off. This may be taken up to three days before your journey begins. If your test result is positive, you must not travel. If you arrive in England without proof of a negative test result, you could be fined £500. Border Force officials are carrying out spot checks. 

Even with the new testing requirements, you must still self-isolate for 10 days, regardless of your pre-departure test result and country you are flying in from, all travel exemption corridors are currently suspended.

The travel rules are continually being assessed by the UK Government so please keep checking the Government website.

Pre-enrolment

All three steps of pre-enrolment must be completed on our online portal - MyHud - and must be done before you can enrol at the University. Please make sure you have your unconditional offer before completing this. You will receive an email with a link to MyHud when you have your Unconditional Offer.

Username: This is your student number, for example u1234567.
Password: This is your date of birth (use this format 19feb98). This is case sensitive.

If you need any help with logging in, you can email the University's IT Support.

Step 1: It is essential that you upload a head and shoulder photo of yourself in jpeg format for your student ID card. Without this you cannot be enrolled at the University

Step 2: ‘My details’ - You must update your term-time address (if you will be in the UK in January use your UK address, if you will be arriving later use your home address for now) and personal details including your email address and mobile number. This step may take several minutes so please make sure you answer as much as you can and go through to the end.

Step 3: Click on this step and read ‘Information for international students’ section – that’s it.

Enrolment

Once you have fully completed pre-enrolment and passed University immigration checks you will be enrolled online by the International Office. From 4 January 2021 you will receive an email from the University to confirm your online enrolment. 

Plase read the email instructions you receive following pre-enrolment. These will have instructions to activate your University IT account. You will be given an online ‘Quick-Start Guide’ to help you understand your new IT account and access to an online 'University Induction 2021' module that will welcome you and introduce you to all you need to know. You will also be given your online subject induction, so you will be ready for the start of your term.
