Prof Richard Hill

Head of Computer Science

Welcome to the Department of Computer Science

Our Department is structured into two areas – Computing and Games and Web – covering a vast range of subjects, taught by staff with real industry experience.

Software, hardware, information systems and games technologies are a vital part of everyday life and what we teach recognises the integral part computers play in the world today.

Preparing our students for careers in cutting-edge fields is at the heart of what we do. We give them access to mobile, wireless computing facilities with Windows, Linux and Apple Mac workstations as well as brand new computer networking and forensic computing laboratories. The Department also houses a fully operational, multi-award-winning games production studio, Canalside Studios and Live:Lab, an interactive learning environment.

All of our full-time, undergraduate courses offer the option of a year in industry supported by our award-winning Placement Unit, enabling students to experience the real-world application of their studies. For those who want to enhance their knowledge further, the Department has a rapidly-expanding research base that underpins our teaching and learning strategy.

We believe in the importance of professional skills and accredited qualifications to help our students rapidly advance in their chosen careers, so a number of our courses are accredited by the BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. We also support our students by paying for them to have BCS student membership. In fact, the University currently has the highest number of BCS student memberships in the UK.
