A Public Lecture by Dr Martin Carr (University of Huddersfield)

The genomes of most living organisms contain parasitic entities called transposable elements. These DNA sequences are capable of self-replication and moving to new locations, in some cases even jumping from one species into another. This talk will look at the impact of transposable elements on genomes and the conflict which arises between elements and their hosts. Transposable elements make up over half of the human genome and we are only now beginning to understand the impact they can have on our health. Recent studies have shown that they are drivers for a number of human diseases and we will look at how a surprising aspect of modern lifestyles can cause transposable elements to be even more harmful to our health.
