We are one of the UK's top 10 providers of sandwich courses and student placements are a vitally important part of the University's overall mission in ensuring that our graduates are equipped with a good balance of knowledge, skills and experience.
Why choose a sandwich or placement?
Sandwich courses and placements give students the perfect opportunity to go out and experience the ‘real world’ whilst studying for their degree. This is a great opportunity for students to find out about a particular job that interests them and get the necessary skills to help them secure a job when they graduate. Don't just take our word for it though. The BBC recently reported that more than a third of jobs for new graduates are taken by people who have already had work experience with that company.
Each year we place students in companies such as Microsoft, Nestle, Cummins and BMW, as well as a large number of smaller local and regional businesses.
Our student placement unit within the School of Computing and Engineering were recently voted the UKs "Best Placement Service" by students at the "Rate my Placement" awards 2011. To find out more how businesses can be involved with student placements please visit our Student and Graduate Talent web pages.
Enterprise placement year - work for yourself, not someone else!
Work placements are an essential part of many courses at the University of Huddersfield, but the conventional route is not your only option. Instead of an internship or placement with an employer, why not think about setting up your own business or working for yourself?
If you fancy giving this a go, contact your school's placement team during the Spring term to apply for a year's support for the Enterprise Team during your year out. You can also find out more here.
Student case study - Chloe McAteer
Fashion designer Chloe McAteer drew her inspiration from the ever-growing range of body art when she launched her range of tattoo-inspired t-shirts. Chloe is a fashion design student at Huddersfield and decided to take up the option of an enterprise placement year that more and more entrepreneurial students are taking instead of following the more traditional route.
Tattoos are not the only things getting Chloe's creativity going. Her range also includes 'Amazing Grace' inspired by the striking looks of a fellow student and the soon to be released collection 'Fighting Fit' inspired by her Dad's enthusiasm for Thai boxing.
