• An Honours degree (2:2 or above) in any subject or an equivalent professional qualification. Applicants with other professional qualifications and/or experience will be considered individually.
• If you do not meet the entry criteria for this course, you may want to take a fast track programme taken over two terms leading to the award of a Certificate in Management Studies (CMS).
• We also consider applicants with significant managerial experience without a formal degree.
• Applicants already holding a University of Huddersfield DMS will enter on to the programme at the start of Year 2 Term 2.

You will study the following modules over 2 years:
Managing People in Organisations (P/T)
This is an extremely practical module which introduces, critically analyses and evaluates key elements of Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour to enable effective deployment of people within organisations. A strategic exploration of the global context within which people work and are managed is also carried out through a range of organisational behaviour concepts and theories.
Assessment for this module is a 5000 word analytical report based upon an organisational case study.
This module aims to provide a simple framework for beginning to understand some of the behaviour observed in firms, markets, and industries and offer some suggestions as to appropriate forms of optimising behaviour. A range of models and concepts for the analysis of business activity are introduced. The discussion will demonstrate that while the assumptions and devices used in economics may sometimes seem simple and abstracted from reality, it can nonetheless often provide a powerful framework for interpreting and framing strategic issues.
Management Development: Venture Creation and the Enterprising Self
This module provides opportunities to develop transferable skills relevant to work roles in a complex and changing environment. You will utilise a range of skills including: creative and entrepreneurial thinking, group working, communication skills, problem solving and decision making. The module encourages action learning, enterprising behaviour and a commitment to continuing professional development.
Assessment is by reflective statement, a group business plan, and a group presentation of the business plan.
Finance for Managers
This module enables you to develop an understanding of the purposes and uses of financial information, together with the ability to use quantitative skills to improve performance management and decision making within an organisation.
Service Operations and Marketing
This module develops your exposure to the needs and wants of a variety of service customers, including the buying behaviour of service customers, segmentation strategies and the customer experience. You will develop your knowledge of managing operations through methods, models, tools and techniques relevant to service provision. The assessment for this module is a 5000 word analytical report based upon an case study.
This module explores the nature of strategic thinking and strategic management within a range of organisations and across business networks. Case study is used extensively to inform this debate and to cultivate analytical competencies. The intention is to develop your abilities to think strategically and increase critical awareness of your roles in, and relationship to, strategy. Module assessment is via a short essay and a case-study based examination.
Global Leadership and Change
This module addresses the need to adapt to different international cultural perspectives and worldviews in the light of changing ideas. A topical and eclectic guest lecture series stretches your thinking and conversational skills leading to an individual assignment which assimilates the ideas received during the lecture programme.
A written group assignment gives you the scope to identify important global concerns and develop new insights into leadership and change issues.
Postgraduate Dissertation Proposal
This module considers how to draft, frame and research a topic on an area of interest. It is a precursor to the dissertation module and equips you to understand both research methods and philosophy. The main research philosophies together with the actual practical means of carrying out business research will be explored.
A written dissertation proposal helps you set out your research ideas and explain your chosen research philosophy and methods. A poster visually depicting your research area, methodology and philosophy will also be submitted.
This module considers business as a socially responsible activity through which improvement and sustainability are rooted in ethical awareness and action. Students consider what constitutes a responsible business, what the global impact of business is, and whether ethical businesses can be commercially successful whilst critically engaging their own values through reflexivity and a critically evaluative case analysis for assessment.
Managing in the Knowledge Economy
This module enables students to recognise the growing importance of knowledge to organisational success, and highlights the need for organisations to create and manage the distribution of knowledge. We will explore the multifaceted nature of knowledge and learning within organisations. The module is assessed by an individual extended project.
This is a self-initiated theoretical and investigative piece of research that offers you an opportunity to research a topic related to your subject in the form of a written dissertation (15,000 words).
In consultation with an allocated supervisor, you agree a suitable research agenda which will allow you to demonstrate a high level of research, analytical and presentational skills. This builds upon the ideas generated from previous study on the dissertation proposal agenda which will allow you to demonstrate a high level of research, analytical and presentational skills.

The Business School is an official HE Partner of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). As an MBA student you will have the opportunity to register for a Diploma from the CMI. Upon graduation you also have the opportunity to apply for Chartered Manager status with the CMI.
Teaching and assessment
We use a range of teaching methods with a significant emphasis on combining contemporary theories and cases with your own managerial experiences. Lectures and seminars are supplemented by guided reading and self-directed study. There are a variety of assessment methods, including individual and group reports, essays, reflective statements, business plans, presentations, an exam and a dissertation.
We value giving informal and formal feedback on all our management modules and we see this as being fundamental on-going development.
The £17m Business School is the most eco-friendly building on campus. It's a state-of-the art facility and provides you with a modern, professional environment in which to learn and develop.
All teaching rooms are high quality and the school has a number of computer labs for teaching or for students' individual or group use. You'll have comprehensive access to online resources through Unilearn, an online learning environment which gives access to all the study materials you'll need.
The Street Café is a perfect area for socialising, networking and relaxation over a wide range of fresh food, hot and cold drinks and free wi-fi. Set in landscaped grounds by the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, the Business School is in close proximity to the Library and Student Central which offers a number of places to eat, areas to socialise with friends, the Students' Union, student services and modern sporting and fitness facilities.
