About the course
The tourism industry remains an essential and important part of the global economy. This degree will help enable our students to gain the practical knowledge, understanding and transferable skills that are essential in both well-established business organisations, and in the rapidly changing world of international business and the global tourism industry.
You'll develop the necessary skills to identify strategies available to firms operating at an international level, and develop an understanding of the activities and operations of multinational enterprises. In addition to this, you will also study the tourism industry and have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge about the tourism business.
You'll study a wide range of topics in international business and tourism industry, from both a theoretical and practical perspective. Modules include International Tourism, Niché Tourism, International Economics and International Business Strategy.
Our innovative teaching methods include extensive case work, in addition to seminars, tutorials and lectures. We encourage students to be highly independent learners. Modules can be based on individual work or group work, and all teaching and assessment is grounded in real life situations or live projects. We incorporate guest speakers and the development of your professional management skills is also a priority.
The emphasis throughout the course will be upon the preparation for careers in business and tourism industry. An increasingly competitive employment market requires graduates with a flexible orientation and this degree will encourage such an approach.

This module builds on your knowledge of the fundamentals of globalisation, international trade and financial crises. You will have the opportunity to explore global economic downturns and consider the causes and consequences of such events both in the developed and developing economies.
International Business Environment
This module looks at of the international business environment and how various institutional contexts and factors such as political, economic and social factors have influenced, and continue to influence international business. This module is designed to develop/widen the knowledge and understanding of the major issues that businesses are confronted with when operating in international markets.
International Business Strategy
This module looks at the strategies of Multinational Enterprises (MNEs), i.e. firms operating in an international context. It covers modes of foreign market entry, operations within MNEs and explores the implications of strategic decisions of MNEs for the structure of the organisation and for transfer of knowledge and control issues between the MNE’s headquarters and its subsidiaries.
Cross Cultural Management
Competence in interacting with people of different cultures is an essential element of international business. The purpose of this module is to develop your personal and professional skills through enhancing your knowledge and understanding of culture and ability to recognise how differences in cultural affect individual and business behaviours. The module draws upon cross-cultural and social psychology theory to develop an understanding and practice of cross cultural competence. You are encouraged to develop an awareness of your own cultural frameworks, consider attitudes to cultural differences with others, develop a knowledge of different cultural practices and knowledge of the process of acquiring cross cultural skills.
The module provides you with a theoretical framework for analysing your professional skills and reflect on your own strengths and weaknesses. This assessment will then form the baseline from which to develop a plan for your own professional development during their period of studies. You will need to demonstrate that you have developed new skills and competences over the duration of the module through a portfolio.
The module involves an analysis of tourism and the structure of the tourist industry. Tourist destination and tourist market will be reviewed and the tourism marketing issues will be investigated. Impacts of tourism from economic, social, and environmental perspectives will be analysed in order to develop tourism products in the destination sustainably.
Niche Tourism may be defined as “a form of tourism which involves consumers whose holiday choice is inspired by specific motivations and whose level of satisfaction is determined by the experience they pursue” (Novelli, 2005). Niche Tourism can be considered as a tourism activity that do not involve large numbers of tourists within a staged setting (which is often referred to as “Mass Tourism”) and has grown in popularity over the years as the tourist has become more sophisticated and discerning. As a result, numerous travel providers have developed products tailored to the needs of people requiring something “different” from the mass tourist. This module will examine the phenomenon of niche tourism and explore different niche tourism products, services, suppliers, destinations and consumer behaviour.
Research Methods and Techniques
This module is a designed to prepare you for your Dissertation. The module looks at how to choose your topic, how to research the current knowledge in your area of interest, and quantitative and qualitative research methods. The module is assessed through the completion of a literature review and proposal for your dissertation. You will be supported both by the module team and an individually assigned supervisor.
This module prepares you for the Applied Consultancy Project. It introduces the theory underpinning the process of consultancy in organisations. The module will analyse various models of consultancy and you will explore different stages in the consultancy cycle including: the purpose of consultancy in business context, project scoping and contracting, information gathering, analysis and report, action planning, implementation, review and exiting. You will also critically examine your own consultancy skills.

Teaching and assessment
The teaching on this programme not only encourages you to develop knowledge of the area, but it also allows you to learn skills in critical thinking and analysis. We use a wide range of teaching styles, from formal lectures to practical experience. Extensive use is made of case studies and current affairs. Modules have different teaching and assessment strategies: in some you will undertake individual work, in others you will work in groups.
Huddersfield Business School is the most eco-friendly building on campus. It's a state-of-the art facility and provides you with a modern, professional environment in which to learn and develop.
All teaching rooms are high quality and the school has a number of computer labs for teaching or for students' individual or group use. You'll have comprehensive access to online resources through Unilearn, an online learning environment which gives access to all the study materials you'll need.

How much will it cost me?
In 2017/18, the part-time tuition fee for UK and EU postgraduate students at the University of Huddersfield will generally be £425 per 15 credit module and £850 per 30 credit module (see Fees and Finance for exceptions). Tuition fees will cover the cost of your study at the University as well as charges for registration, tuition, supervision and examinations.
