About the course
This is a well-established course designed to meet the needs of students who have already completed an undergraduate business related degree and who wish to develop their subject specialism in international business management.
The programme will give you the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the rapidly changing and dynamic international environment and various cross border business activities. You will also be enabled to develop the skills to identify the strategies available to firms operating at an international level and develop an understanding of the activities and operations of multinational enterprises. This programme will provide the opportunity for you to study a wide range of topics in international business from both a theoretical and practical perspective. The programme is designed around core modules which cover the fundamentals of international business and the options offer the flexibility for you to tailor the programme to your personal and career interests.

International Business Environment
This module looks at of the international business environment and how various institutional contexts and factors such as political, economic and social factors have influenced, and continue to influence international business. This module is designed to develop/widen the knowledge and understanding of the major issues that businesses are confronted with when operating in international markets.
International Business Strategy
This module looks at the strategies of Multinational Enterprises (MNEs), i.e. firms operating in an international context. It covers modes of foreign market entry, operations within MNEs and explores the implications of strategic decisions of MNEs for the structure of the organisation and for transfer of knowledge and control issues between the MNE’s headquarters and its subsidiaries.
This module builds on your knowledge of the fundamentals of globalisation, international trade and financial crises. You will have the opportunity to explore global economic downturns and consider the causes and consequences of such events both in the developed and developing economies.
This module provides you with a substantial body of knowledge relating to the principles of strategic management in particular the two broad areas of techniques for analysing organisations and their environments and the identification of appropriate strategic choices. You will be encouraged to practice analyses and strategic designs throughout the delivery of the module.
Research Methods and Techniques
This module is a designed to prepare you for your Dissertation. The module looks at how to choose your topic, how to research the current knowledge in your area of interest, and quantitative and qualitative research methods. The module is assessed through the completion of a literature review and proposal for your dissertation. You will be supported both by the module team and an individually assigned supervisor.
Corporate Responsibility & Governance
The aim of this module is to enable your understanding of the theory and practice of corporate governance and how this interfaces with ethical issues involving stakeholders in corporations. It attempts to achieve this through a mix of seminars, cases, and exercises that promote critical and reflective debate.
This is the final piece of work of your Master’s studies. You will investigate an issue of your choice in depth and, through your research, you’ll create new knowledge. This normally includes designing a framework for your investigation and choosing the appropriate way to conduct your studies. Your research will be written up in the form of a dissertation, that takes place over a number of months, during which you will be supported by a supervisor.

The International Marketing module focuses on the key decisions that need to be made by organisations when considering operating in international markets. This includes the pros and cons of trading internationally, which markets to select, how to enter the market, and how to develop marketing programmes for the target market. This will be supported by study of the international environment and global customers. Assessment for this module is based on an individual assignment.
International Trade Operations
The module introduces the operational elements of international trade and the roles of the organisations involved. It considers the practical aspects of sourcing and purchasing goods and services internationally and also provides and understanding of the processes and procedures involved in the import and export business.
Economics of Financial Markets
After the global financial crisis, economic and financial interdependence have increased significantly. This module introduces you to a more integrated analysis of the economics behind banking and financial services, financial systems and institutions. It considers the impact of economics on financial markets by considering economic data, macroeconomic theory and some of the latest developments in the role played by monetary policy.
Globalisation and Financial Crisis
This module builds on your knowledge of the fundamentals of globalisation and financial crises. You will have the opportunity to explore global economic downturns and consider the causes and consequences of such events.
International Human Resource Management
This module explores human resource management emphasising the international dimension. Differing national cultures and an increasingly globalised economy are key aspects of the module. The module examines the strategies and practices of multinational corporations as well as a range of public, private and voluntary organisations in a wide range of different countries and cultural contexts
International Business Finance
This module considers the two main roles of the Financial Manager within the enterprise; the ability to meet the firm’s finance needs and to ensure that the finance is used in a productive manner. In particular the module considers the additional tasks and problems that the financial manager will encounter when trading overseas as either an exporter/importer or a multinational organisation and the strategies that can be used to overcome these problems.
The module involves an analysis of tourism and the structure of the tourist industry. Tourist destination and tourist market will be reviewed and the tourism marketing issues will be investigated. Impacts of tourism from economic, social, and environmental perspectives will be analysed in order to develop tourism products in the destination sustainably.
Entrepreneurship in a Global Context
The module will examine how entrepreneurs create and manage emerging ventures in other countries, and create and manage start-ups or emerging ventures which are global in at least one important aspect. This module is evaluating the global and international environments in terms of the characteristics of economy, society and policy making for entrepreneurship of all types, such as science and social entrepreneurship.
Cross Cultural Management
Competence in interacting with people of different cultures is an essential element of international business. The purpose of this module is to develop your personal and professional skills through enhancing your knowledge and understanding of culture and ability to recognise how differences in cultural affect individual and business behaviours. The module draws upon cross-cultural and social psychology theory to develop an understanding and practice of cross cultural competence. You are encouraged to develop an awareness of your own cultural frameworks, consider attitudes to cultural differences with others, develop a knowledge of different cultural practices and knowledge of the process of acquiring cross cultural skills.
The final element of study is an individual piece of research which will allows you to shape your degree to meet your own professional interests.To support your research, we will teach you about core aspect of the research process through the Research Methods and Techniques module.

How much will it cost me?
In 2017/18, the part-time tuition fee for UK and EU postgraduate students at the University of Huddersfield will generally be £425 per 15 credit module and £850 per 30 credit module (see Fees and Finance for exceptions). Tuition fees will cover the cost of your study at the University as well as charges for registration, tuition, supervision and examinations.
