About the course
This course is a conversion Master's course, designed to offer you the opportunity to develop the business skills needed to aspire to management positions in any profession. The course is intended for graduates who have not previously studied business or management. Through the development of appropriate professional skills, the course helps prepare you for a career in business management and leadership in the UK or overseas; as well as providing the foundation for moving into senior management positions in the future.
Our students come from a wide range of first degree subject areas, and many different nations, adding both a richness and breadth of perspectives to the cohorts.
The varied topics are studied through a range of different and engaging activities which include; formal lectures, group discussions, case study analysis, presentations, and opportunities to attend guest speaker sessions. A variety of assessment methods are also utilised. Emphasis is placed on developing a critical perspective towards research, practice, and decision-making.
The course structure provides a set of modules covering fundamental business skills; essential for understanding the contemporary business environment. It includes the advanced study of organisations, their management and the changing external context in which they operate, using real-world examples. With this business tool-kit, you'll have the opportunity to increase your awareness and confidence when dealing with the complex issues professionals face in a volatile globalised economy.
The course offers additional routes specialising in Finance or Human Resource Management (HRM).

We accept the following:
• An Honours degree (2:2 or above) in any subject or an equivalent professional qualification.
• Applicants with other professional qualifications and/or experience will be considered individually.
• Practicing managers with relevant experience and academic potential will be considered on an exceptional basis.
International applicants must also demonstrate proficiency in English language. You will normally be required to meet a score of 6.0 on International English Language Tests.

You study the following modules:
Introduction to Project Management
This module introduces you to the role and key elements of project management. This includes understanding the processes, techniques and skills required to manage business change effectively. This module acts as a primer to more detailed and expansive discussions in later modules within the course.
This module utilises a strategic marketing planning process as a framework and focuses on the key issues concerning in each stage. It also looks at the failures and successes of different aspects marketing strategies, by studying real-life examples. The assessment is based on an individual essay, which examines a case company’s marketing strategies.
Management Development: Venture Creation and the Enterprising Self
This module provides opportunities to develop transferable skills relevant to work roles in a complex and changing environment. You will utilise a range of skills including: creative and entrepreneurial thinking, group working, communication skills, problem solving and decision making. The module encourages action learning, enterprising behaviour and a commitment to continuing professional development.
Assessment is by reflective statement, a group business plan, and a group presentation of the business plan.
Global Leadership and Change
This module addresses the need to adapt to different international cultural perspectives and worldviews in the light of changing ideas. A topical and eclectic guest lecture series stretches your thinking and conversational skills leading to an individual assignment which assimilates the ideas received during the lecture programme.
A written group assignment gives you the scope to identify important global concerns and develop new insights into leadership and change issues.
Managing People in Organisations (F/T)
Managing People in Organisations is an extremely practical module which introduces critically analyses and evaluates key elements of Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour to enable effective deployment of people within organisations. A strategic exploration of the global context within which people work and are managed is also carried out through a range of organisational behaviour concepts and theories.
Finance for Managers
This module enables you to develop an understanding of the purposes and uses of financial information, together with the ability to use quantitative skills to improve performance management and decision making within an organisation.
Human Resource Strategy
The ways that people are managed have a big influence on organisational performance yet many organisations still fail to connect human resource management to business strategy. This module first examines the main Human Resource Management (HRM) practices before examining how it can be linked to business strategy.
Service Operations and Marketing
This module develops your exposure to the needs and wants of a variety of service customers, including the buying behaviour of service customers, segmentation strategies and the customer experience. You will develop your knowledge of managing operations through methods, models, tools and techniques relevant to service provision. The assessment for this module is a 5000 word analytical report based upon an case study.
Corporate Responsibility & Governance
The aim of this module is to enable your understanding of the theory and practice of corporate governance and how this interfaces with ethical issues involving stakeholders in corporations. It attempts to achieve this through a mix of seminars, cases, and exercises that promote critical and reflective debate.
In addition, you will receive instruction in research methodology and submit a research proposal that forms the basis of the master's dissertation. The dissertation presents you with the opportunity to apply key concepts from the taught programme in more depth to an area of specific interest while deepening your grasp of the relationship between theory and practice in business management.

We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let students know in good time the options available for them to choose for the following year.
We will only change core modules for a course if it is necessary for us to do so, for example to maintain course accreditation. We will let you know about any such changes as soon as possible, usually before you begin the relevant academic year.

The Business School is an official HE Partner of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and you have the opportunity to achieve an industry recognised CMI professional qualification through no additional study or assessment.
Teaching and assessment

All teaching rooms are high quality and the school has a number of computer labs for teaching or for students' individual or group use. You will have comprehensive access to online resources and study materials through Unilearn, the university's online learning environment.

Set in landscaped grounds by the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, the Huddersfield Business School is in close proximity to the Library and Student Central which also offers a number of places to eat, areas to socialise with friends, the Students' Union, student services and modern sporting and fitness facilities.

How much will it cost me?
In 2017/18, the part-time tuition fee for UK and EU postgraduate students at the University of Huddersfield will generally be £425 per 15 credit module and £850 per 30 credit module (see Fees and Finance for exceptions). Tuition fees will cover the cost of your study at the University as well as charges for registration, tuition, supervision and examinations.
