About the course
This course reflects the growing importance of transport and logistics management within the world of business. A career in transport and logistics could mean working with a specialist provider of logistics and distribution services, a train operator, a bus or coach company, a consultancy or possibly the armed forces. The course also covers operational and economic aspects of passenger transport. Transport and logistics managers aim to provide the means of getting goods to flow through the supply chain. Other equally important tasks are carried out by logistics analysts, customer services managers and purchasing managers. This course also provides opportunities for those wishing to follow careers in passenger transport management and tourism. We have established a large number of industry contacts such as Cross-Country Trains, DHL and Royal Mail who provides us with some great guest lectures, enable site visits and most importantly help provide opportunities for work placements and graduate employment opportunities. This course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).

This long established course reflects the growing importance of logistics management within the world of business. You'll explore the vital role of transport, alongside aspects of business and commercial management.
Principles of Logistics
This module provides a fundamental understanding of the key aspects of logistics and supply chain management. It focuses on the identification of the relationships between logistics activities and looks at how changing business conditions have impacted on the development of the sector. The principles underpinning effective management of material flows are analysed with specific regard to inventory and distribution management and their role in creating customer satisfaction. The application of information technology and the need to comply with increasing environmental regulations will also be considered.
This module will help you to develop your professional and personal skills with an emphasis on employability and enterprise. Lectures, workshops and tutorials will help you to develop and practice your reading, writing, presentation, teamwork and research skills. ICT skills will be enhanced through the delivery of workshops and competence testing. Data analysis and statistical techniques will be used to show how these tools are vital in performing the tasks required within industry. You’ll have the opportunity to develop the ability to choose, use and manage appropriate mathematical, statistical and ICT systems and techniques to produce and disseminate meaningful management information. The module incorporates elements of PDP and self-evaluation. A weekend residential field trip in the first term will focus on team-building skills.
This module introduces you to financial and commercial management, helping to build your understanding of this vital area of business management and helping to support you in your future career. You’ll have the opportunity to develop your understanding of financial statements and how these are used to appraise the performance of a business and you’ll explore the use of information for business control and management decision making.
Economics and Marketing
One half of the module provides an introduction to the principles of micro-economics. You’ll particularly focus on applications in logistics, supply chain management, air transport and transport. The other half of the module introduces key principles of strategic and operational marketing. You’ll have the opportunity to gain an understanding of the underlying concepts and theories underpinning marketing practice and its application in the sectors mentioned above.
Transport: Challenges and Issues
This introductory module provides a perspective on a wide range of policy-related topics focusing in the transportation of people (primarily) and the transportation of goods (secondarily). It provides a foundation for more in-depth study at later stages.

Introduction to Air Transport
This module gives you an overview of the different players in air transport (e.g. airlines, airports, air traffic control, airline catering). Furthermore it helps provide you with the fundamental concepts of air law, government policy and environmental aspects of air transport. You’ll have the opportunity to undertake research in groups on different airlines and present them to your peers.
Fundamentals of Tourism
This module will introduce you to the fundamental concepts and principles relating to the study of tourism and the tourist industry. The nature of tourism will be explored through an analysis of definitions, trends, market characteristics, determinants and motivations, product development, and an outline of the main industry sectors. The development of tourism will be analysed in the context of its history, macro-environment and the economic, social, cultural and environmental impacts that it imparts. Principles of sustainable tourism development will be introduced.
Organisations and People
The module will introduce you to the characteristics of organisations and explore how they operate and what influences them. The structures, operations and management aspects of organisations will be analysed. The specific behaviour of people at work will also be examined in order to understand their motivations. Whilst some of the theories of management styles will be discussed, emphasis will be placed on developing your personal skills with regard to key business activities.

Passenger Transport Management
The focus of this module is on the day-to-day operational and strategic management of passenger transport including urban, interurban and rural public transport operations (heavy rail, light rail, bus, coach, mobility-sharing schemes) and private transport. It should help contribute to your understanding of passenger transport cost considerations as well as aspects of transport demand and revenue management. This is relevant to those of you who intend to work in the passenger transport and tourism industries in the private and public sector. The module draws on relevant concepts supported by examples and practical issues emerging from different companies in the sector.
Physical Logistics Management
This module focuses on the physical logistics elements of the supply chain, considering material handling, storage and freight transportation and the associated management of these activities. In addition to examining the benefits and operation of alternative modes of transport.
Planning Techniques for Logistics and Transport Operations
This module introduces a range of practical and analytical planning techniques used within the logistics industry. Basic techniques used to solve logistics problems will be explained in lectures whilst more complex issues are addressed in computing tutorials. You’ll become familiar with the use of industry specific software in the area of linear programming, planning, inventory control, forecasting and simulation in logistics.
Human Resource Management and the Workplace
This module is designed to generate increased confidence when entering and working in the workplace. The module offers you the opportunity to stimulate your learning through a series of employability workshops relating to topics such as CVs, covering letters, application forms, interviews and assessment centres and will introduce you to a wide range of transferable skills. Human Resource Management & Development will be introduced and the module will demonstrate how this contributes to organisational success in a rapidly changing environment. The module will identify key HRM issues, practices and procedures.
Project Quality Management
This module introduces you to the various models & frameworks, tools & techniques and underlying principles of the quality movement and project management. Case material relevant to manufacturing and service industries is introduced and provides experience of practical application, including the use of software (MS Project) for project planning and control.

Purchasing and Supply
This module explores the role of purchasing and supply as a key driver enabling the smooth flow of goods at optimum cost whilst meeting the specific requirements of the end user. The module will examine the different approaches to managing the inputs to the supply chain and will analyse how the function can contribute to an efficient and effective organisation.
Manufacturing and Operations Management
This module will help provide you with a detailed knowledge of operations management within the field of supply chain management. It attempts to give you an awareness of the importance of manufacturing and its impacts across different supply chain functions ranging from product design to after-market support. It will give you an insight into the different planning methods and supporting systems underpinning modern manufacturing operations.
Airline and Airports Operations and Planning
This module provides an analysis of the major elements of airline and airport operations (e.g. airline scheduling, airport passenger operations) and will be relevant to you if you intend to work in the airline or airport sector. It will help give you a broader view of the airlines’ and airports’ operational environment and procedure.

Strategic Supply Chain Management
This module evaluates the role of logistics and supply chain management in helping to achieve the strategic objectives of an organisation. You’ll explore how managing strategically across the entire supply chain can help an organisation to achieve and maintain its competitive edge in terms of market share and / or profitability. You’ll have the opportunity to diagnose problems within supply chains and to demonstrate your grasp of how different supply chain strategies can positively impact the performance of the firm.
Global Business Strategy
This module applies the principles of Strategic Management to the international business through a study of concepts and theories. This module will be divided into four parts: Introduction to Strategic Management, Strategic Analysis, Strategic Choice and Strategic Implementation/Evaluation and on completion of this module, you should have a good understanding aware of the importance of effective Strategic Management for any organisation.
The aim of this module is to help develop your skills and ability to carry out an original investigation into a particular problem. In the early stages of project development, lectures provide guidance in various important aspects of project formulation and development, such as choice of appropriate methodology, literature sources and review techniques, specification of data requirements, data collection and data analysis. For the remainder of the module, emphasis is placed on individual study, supported by regular personal supervision.
Transport Economics and Policy
This module aims to provide you with the necessary tools and in-depth knowledge that will give you the opportunity to develop a thorough understanding of a wide range of contemporary transport issues. These are analysed and set primarily within a policy and economics context suitable for the level of study. The module builds upon concepts developed in year one and two.

Retail and Manufacturing Logistics
This module examines the role of logistics in supporting the retail industry and providing a basis for competitive advantage. You’ll have the opportunity to gain an understanding of the structure of the retailing industry and the increased pressures being placed on suppliers and distributors. Retail network structures are analysed recognising the impact of globalisation and the growth in e-retailing on the total supply chain.
This module critically examines the concept of sustainability and its application to the tourist industry. It investigates some of the cost and benefits of tourism development in terms of its impacts on host communities and environments and analyses the ways in which sustainable principles have been applied within the industry. Planning for tourism at local, regional, national and international level will be appraised in terms of the application of these principles through a range of case studies.
Airline and Airports Economics and Marketing
This module comprises the major components of airline and airport economics and marketing and is relevant to those of you who are hoping to obtain management positions in the airline or airport sector. Specifically it seeks to help equip you with the key skills and knowledge of airline/airport cost and revenue inputs in order to make sound managerial decisions. Practical cases and examples are developed throughout the module to support theoretical understanding.

Teaching and assessment
You will be taught through a series of lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops, role play, case studies, case projects, site visits and fieldwork trips. You can also take part in innovative industry based projects and will have the opportunity to present work to a professional audience. Assessment will include exams, oral presentations, case studies, in-class tests, reports, essays and case study analysis.

In 2017/18, the tuition fee for UK and EU students at the University of Huddersfield will be £9,250.
