This non-clinical course is aimed at individuals currently working or intending to work in public health administration roles. You may be a health or non-health professional who is interested in developing your knowledge and understanding of public health administration. The course provides the opportunity for you to develop leadership, management and administration skills for use in a public health context, which is informed by up to date evidence. You may also broaden your knowledge and understanding of public health issues from an international perspective. This includes a consideration of strategic change and development, leadership and management in public health services.

You must have:
• 2:2 bachelor's degree or above (or equivalent) in a subject relevant to public health, such as health professional qualifications, social sciences, applied sciences, business, leadership, management or administration.
• Some experience of working in public health services is recommended.
• For applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum of IELTS 6.5 overall with no element lower than 6.0, will be considered acceptable, or equivalent.
If you have IELTS score of 6.0 with no less than a score of 6.0 in any one element your application will be reviewed on a case by case basis. If you are offered a place, you will be required to complete the English module AMP1234 in Music, Humanities and Media as a compulsory part of your course.
Some option modules may require specific qualifications, experience, expertise or background.
You may be eligible to gain accreditation for your prior learning towards this course.
The core modules are:
International Perspectives in Health and Social Care
This module will address the ways in which the contemporary processes of globalisation impact upon health and social policy. You will gain an understanding of social policy in a global context, drawing upon a range of perspectives to examine topics including welfare regimes, social justice, agency of provision and re-distribution of economic activity. You will be assessed through two pieces of coursework; firstly a presentation discussing an international issue of your choice, and secondly a written essay comprising a critical examination of the same issue.
Public Health Administration in Context
In this module you will have the opportunity to critically explore the place of public health administration, its context related to your own experience and background, as well as in a global context. An understanding of public health issues, communities, healthcare inequalities within populations and gender inequality, will underpin this exploration. Working in learning sets and through a series of tutorials, seminars, and guided personal study, you will reflect on and debate public health administration, contextualising your learning from other modules. You will be assessed through coursework where you will construct a portfolio.
Strategic Thinking in a Healthcare Context
This module explores the nature of strategic thinking and strategic management in a range of organisations. We use strategy theories and concepts to evaluate: strategy creation, strategic choice, strategy implementation and organisational learning. The assessment strategy combines a case study analysis and a reflective statement.
Managing and Developing Activities
The module is designed to provide a practical approach to strategic and operational continuous improvement and the improvement of performance. To enable effective management of operational and strategic activities, the content provides the underpinning knowledge of data analysis and improvement techniques. The assessment is an action based project based on the student’s own organisation to integrate the continuous improvement focus and the information for decision making themes in the module.
Critical Appraisal of Research Literature
In this module you will be encouraged to develop your understanding of methodological design. You will study the critical appraisal of a variety of aspects of published quantitative and qualitative research in practice settings, and will consider the utilisation of your knowledge and skills in future career developments, through pursuing autonomous practice and agenda setting in your profession. You will be assessed through one piece of coursework.
Research Project Preparation
This module provides the opportunity for you to develop the knowledge and skills required to design ethical and feasible research projects relevant to your practice, role or academic studies. You will also explore the different aspects involved when designing a research proposal. Assessment will involve producing one piece of coursework, in the form of a research proposal which addresses a particular practice need within your clinical area.
Project (Health Related)
This module provides the opportunity to develop a working project proposal facilitated with learning materials and procedural guidance made available electronically. In addition you will attend lectures and have access to supervision with a subject specialist or researcher in the field. You will be assessed through submission of coursework in the form of a project.

Advanced Practice in Diabetes Care
In this module you will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge of the prevention, detection and management of complications associated with diabetes by examining pathological, physiological and psychosocial factors, which influence the condition throughout the lifespan of the individual. Utilising current evidence, you will reflect on and question existing practice, in order to answer clinical questions regarding the management of an individual with diabetes. You will be assessed through a multiple choice examination as well as a seen written exam.
Food Safety 1
Lectures examine the major problems and causes of food poisoning and the principal agents and food sources. Emerging problems and pathogens are explored. Indicator organisms and the developing field of rapid methods for estimating microbiological contamination are critically reviewed and assessed. Preventative systems, particularly HACCP, are explored and their application to food preparation and manufacturing are practised.
Food Safety 2 (Nutritional Aspects)
This module focuses on those safety aspects of food which are not involved with bacterial contamination. It includes a consideration of many of the factors in food which are either naturally present, intentionally added or contaminating and which cause adverse physiological effects when eaten by some people. The most important of these factors which cause food intolerance are potential allergens, toxins, heavy metals and additives.
Food Aversion and food avoidance are also considered, particularly in their most extreme forms of anorexia and bulimia nervosa.
This module is considers practical skills for developing effective working relationships with specific reference to leading teams within the organisation. We review the nature interpersonal management from Organisation Behaviour and Human Resource Management perspectives. The module is assessed via a case study.
Long Term Conditions
Through this module you will have the opportunity to enhance your knowledge and understanding of the policy drivers, principles and strategies required to effectively manage people with long-term conditions. You will explore the principles of case management, expert patient programmes, therapeutic interventions, medicines management, palliative care and service user perspectives in relation to long-term conditions. You will be assessed through a piece of coursework, in the form of a case study focusing on a client with a long-term condition and the strategies used during their care.
Managing Planned Change using Project Frameworks
This module assesses the role of project management frameworks and concepts in conceptualisIng and managing planned change within organisations; particular attention is given to project management - both organisational and inter-organisational - within the public sector.
Consideration is given to the wider political and strategic context and how these impact upon the technical and behavioural aspects of change. The module analyses the complexities of managing change from both human and technical perspectives, drawing on theories of change management and through the use of project and process management tools. The syllabus draws on real life examples with a view to raising the learners’ appreciation of, and opportunities for, participation in projects within their organisations.
Nutrition and Public Health 1
The module examines the application of the principles of nutrition in studying the relationships between food, health and disease. This includes a consideration of diet and major ‘diseases of affluence’ such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and some gastro-intestinal disorders. The link between diet and cancer and the contribution of nutrition to bone and oral health is also discussed. The module concludes with a consideration of nutritional genomics and the role of nutritional support.
Nutrition and Public Health 2
The module allows the principles of nutrition to be applied to the study of the nutritional status of various groups of people in the community. Nutritional status through the life span is discussed and is critically evaluated in terms of nutritional adequacy. Life stages include during fertility and pre-conception, pregnancy, infancy, pre-school and school children, adolescents, older adults and ethnic groups.
Obesity Prevention and Management
This module is aimed at health and fitness professionals who have a remit to prevent or manage overweight and obese children and adults. You will reflect on and discuss current research findings regarding obesity, explore the role of professionals in the management of obesity, investigate the impact of local and national policies and access up-to-date technology related to the measurement of obesity. Assessment will involve producing two pieces of coursework, a critical review of literature and a conference paper presentation.
Supporting Diabetes Self Care
Through this module various behavioural models will be applied to a range of issues which affect people with diabetes. You will have the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills, enabling you to provide evidence based interventions for your patients with diabetes, in order to achieve desirable outcomes and goals. Assessment will involve undertaking a practical exam and producing a piece of coursework, in the form of a patient clinical management plan.

Teaching and assessment
Teaching, learning and assessment are designed to offer students a variety of learning and assessment opportunities that align with their module learning outcomes and offer realistic and effective preparation for progression in the public health administration field. Learning and teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars, individual and group activities. This includes case based analysis, use of learning contracts, workshops, involving student led presentations and debates.Assessment is a combination of coursework, case based analysis, projects, and presentations.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results. Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.

A Master's course is 180 Master's level credits, which would normally take one calendar year full-time study. Interim awards are available at Postgraduate Certificate or level Postgraduate Diploma level should you decide to exit the course early.
