About the course
Industrial productivity and performance of many UK manufacturing companies, when compared to recognised world leaders, is considered by many to be of concern. Part of the underlying cause of this problem is the lack of well-educated and trained engineering and technology graduates entering the Engineering Management disciplines who are able to develop appropriate management strategies and to apply best practice techniques and technologies to industrial problems.
This course is designed to extend the knowledge, skills and ability of a graduate in engineering, technology and applied sciences to the level required for senior positions in the engineering industry.

Entry requirements for this course are usually the following:
• An Honours degree (2:2 or above) in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering or similar, or in a closely related science subject area such as physics or mathematics or an equivalent professional qualification.
• You are also encouraged to apply if you have other qualifications and/or experience and can demonstrate that you are equipped with knowledge and skills equivalent to Honours degree level.
• For applicants whose first language or language of instruction is not English you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum of IELTS 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent will be considered acceptable.
Professional Development and Research Methods
This is an innovative module which you will hopefully find not only challenging but also rewarding as it aims to extend the way you think about engineering management excellence and research application. It has been designed to deliver a detailed understanding of overarching professional management concepts and standards, based upon the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence, together with both industrial and academic career progression. The module provides a number of diagnostic instruments and application tools which enable you to benchmark your interpersonal skills and provide reflective career planning through portfolio development, aligned to professional registration routes. It will further examine the process of change management and the importance of technical and commercial leadership within an industrial context. Specific focus will be placed upon individual obligations to society, the profession and the environment.
Total Quality Engineering
This module has been designed to be offered to students who have a basic understanding of operations management, quality assurance and control, together with the statistical techniques employed in probability theory. The module aims to build on this knowledge, giving you the ability to implement and operate quality systems, maintenance regimes and reliability trials.
The module addresses strategic challenges facing firms with regard to sustainable development through process improvement pressures for a business excellence total quality management and performance monitoring. The module will use case studies and provide tools and techniques to show how a firm might prepare a strategic response to internal and external challenges.
Supply Chain Planning and Control
The module will demonstrate how data can be obtained, extracted and manipulated to enable decision support tools to be used to underpin the planning and control of operations and the supply chain.
The assessment for this module is based on an individual report and an In-class test. Throughout the delivery of the module the tutors will use software and other teaching aids to enhance learning and provide feedback.
New Product Development
There is always a demand for products with improved quality, speed and price; and businesses need to update their product portfolios to meet this demand.
This module explores the skills required to implement and manage the new product development (NPD) process within the context of a commercial enterprise. You'll have the opportunity to examine the evolution, development and exploitation of NPD strategies; together with consideration of innovation policies, models, culture and practice.
You’ll may also develop appropriate management methodologies that can enable you to assess new product ideas, determine feasibility, and identify those products that will be a commercial success.
This module aims to develop improved understandings of the strategic aspects of programme and project management and its role in adding competitive advantage to your enterprise. You will have the chance to gain a firm grounding in the principles, processes, tools and techniques that underpin programme and project management, but also be encouraged to challenge traditional thinking in the field. Concepts, standards and techniques for project and programme lifecycle management are introduced, developed and applied, with the aid of industrially relevant case material. Emphasis is placed upon the need for competence in project planning and control. Team-working, communication and risk management skills are developed by means of group activity. Extensive use is made of project management software.
Finance for Managers
This module enables you to develop an understanding of the purposes and uses of financial information, together with the ability to use quantitative skills to improve performance management and decision making within an organisation.
Development of Dimensional Measurement
The module combines the theory and practical application of metrology for dimensional measurement of manufactured components. The module reviews the basic principles of metrology including calibration, traceability and inter-changeability. You'll be supported in performing measurements and in analysing data during laboratory work and study contemporary instruments including laser interferometers and co-ordinate measurement machines (CMMs). The application of international standards and the propagation of uncertainty associated with practical measurement, in particular the effects of temperature, will be reviewed and the use of temperature measurement techniques such as thermal imaging will be covered.
This module aims to provide you with a systematic understanding of the behaviour of charged particles in cyclic accelerators, and their simulation using MATLAB and MAD.

Teaching and assessment
The course is taught principally through lectures, tutorials, studio-based assignment work and lab-based research activities.
We aim to arrange your major project in relation to an existing industrial engineering management problem. Assessment methods reflect the emphasis of the course on the ability to apply knowledge and skills, and are diversely linked to examination, assignment, project work, research and lab activities.
15% of the study time on this course is spent in lectures, seminars, tutorials etc.

Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results.

Our modern facilities include an impressive range of professionally equipped laboratories for engineering. There are also a computer numerical control (CNC) machine tool facility and metrology laboratory and an extensive condition monitoring research laboratory for engineers wishing to undertake projects in these areas.
In addition, our computing laboratories are equipped with industry standard software for measurement and control and for computer aided engineering applications - all with high speed internet access.
How much will it cost me?

A Master's course is 180 Master's level credits, which would normally take one calendar year full-time study. Interim awards are available at Postgraduate Certificate level or Postgraduate Diploma level should you decide to exit the course early.
