Professor Shona Bettany

Head of Logistics, Marketing, Hospitality and Analytics

Welcome to the Department of Logistics, Marketing, Hospitality and Analytics. We are a vibrant department who take pride in providing an excellent learning environment, offering a range of innovative programmes and modules. Our strengths are in providing a hands-on approach to learning with opportunities available for students to experience real life logistics environments, operations, hospitality businesses, marketing projects and running of events.

With a key focus on employability of our students, we provide our undergraduates with the opportunity to obtain a 12 month work placement in their third year of study. During their placement, they can develop new skills and gain a valuable experience, which will be advantageous to their future careers. We also have excellent links with industry and professional bodies. Our learning utilises the latest computer software in our respective subject areas and the use of applied learning using a variety of case studies. Our Logistics and Supply Chain Management BSc(Hons) course is backed by industry partners in the NOVUS Trust, including companies such as DHL, Sainsbury’s, Cummins, Wincanton, Premier Foods, Arla, Network Rail and Travis Perkins. The course provides company mentoring throughout the programme, industry led sessions, additional professional qualifications, paid vacation and sandwich year placements and most importantly, a guaranteed graduate job with one of the sponsoring companies (subject to meeting scheme criteria).

Our staff are experts in their fields and dedicated to providing an excellent student experience, resulting in very high student satisfaction scores in the National Student Survey (NSS) in previous years. Our staff are also involved in conducting internationally leading research and have been successful in winning funding from external bodies (for e.g. InnovateUK) for research.

Professional Links

Each subject group works with various external organisations and has the appropriate professional links for enhancing learning on the courses, as well as conducting industry valued research.

Logistics, Supply Chain and Transport

This subject group runs the only UK UG degree in Logistics and Supply chain Management that is supported by 28 leading companies in the UK through the NOVUS trust. We have excellent links with logistics and supply chain companies, retailers and software providers, transport companies, ports and airports.

Hospitality, Events and Tourism

This subject group has professional links with a number of event management companies, charities and hospitality businesses, both within the UK and internationally. We have close collaborative links with the Taj group in India. The Events Management and Volunteering Agency (EMVA) is a part of the UG course structure, and provides valuable links with industry and experience for UG students to run live events.

Operations Management

The operations subject group has excellent links with both manufacturing and service industries, sports organisations and the NHS.

The Operations and Supply Chain Management MSc is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS), a globally recognised professional organisation with over 45,000 members. Upon graduating, our students are automatically eligible to apply for CIPS membership, gaining access to a network of 65,000 procurement and supply professionals from around the world.

Marketing

This subject group works with a wide variety of partners in a number of contexts, including teaching, research and consultancy.

All of our undergraduate and postgraduate courses feature a range of guest speakers. These are drawn from industry, consultancy, business, and occasionally other universities; and they enrich the student experience by bringing their expertise and experience into the classroom. Some of these are large, national and international organisations; some are small businesses or social enterprises.

We have close relationships with a number of professional bodies. These not only provide accreditations (see below) but also other inputs to our programmes. Every year, The Chartered Institute of Marketing organises a competition called 'The Pitch', which a team of our Marketing students won in 2012. Our students have won awards from the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing, at both Undergraduate and Master’s level, as a result of competitions which they have entered and won. Our final year students also enter the annual 'Brandstorm' competition, sponsored by international cosmetic giant L’Oreal, as part of a brand management module. Our students are regularly shortlisted for the finals and won the competition in 2012.

Research

We have a dynamic research community across all subject groups who are involved in multidisciplinary research. The research focuses on various topics within the respective subject areas. Staff across the department are experienced in supervising PhDs, and we currently have a number of part time and full time PhD students. We are also involved in securing research funding and are involved in applying for grants through KTPs, EPSRC, ESRC, BAM, NIHR, CILT and Horizon2020.
