Careers and starting your own business

Careers and Employability

We know you’re coming to university to undertake your course, meet new people and broaden your horizons. However, we also help you to focus on life after you have graduated to ensure that your hard work pays off and you achieve you ambition.

So while you’re here (and even after you graduate!) the Careers and Employability Service will act like your fairy godmother - always there when you ask for help, support and guidance.

Careers advice and support

Talk to our friendly advisers face to face or via our e-guidance or telephone if you’re not on campus. The Careers and Employability Service offers a range of support and practical help to help you to prepare and step into your chosen career after you graduate with us. This includes:

Career development workshops – get ahead by attending workshops that have input from employers. This will ensure that you develop your skills and experience around what organisations are looking for when they recruit new staff.

Career fairs - we hold regular events which are a great way of making contacts and discovering opportunities from local and national companies.

JobShop - If there’s a vacancy for part-time, holiday work or a graduate opportunity, we’ll post it on the JobShop website to help you boost your income and build your CV.

Careers Information Library – contains all the information, reference materials and interactive tools you need to help support you in your career planning.

Start your own business

Through the Enterprise Team, we help current students and graduates within five years to prepare for self-employment or business start-up.

The team supports students to start their own business through our ‘Enterprise Placement Year’ scheme, an alternative option to undertaking a placement year, advice and coaching, grant opportunities and facility use. You can even attend a series of enterprise events which offer advice on writing a business plan, researching the market and developing essential networking skills.
