The students who helped us write the prospectus have compiled a list of tips on how to manage your money – definitely worth some consideration as you start to plan your life at uni.
Make sure money for these is always taken out first as they’re the most important, and can get you into trouble if not paid on time.
If you have a decent sized freezer, buying frozen veg and other frozen foods will last longer than fresh ones meaning you won’t have to spend as regularly. Make sure you get all your vitamins and minerals otherwise you will find yourself getting tired and ill – putting your studies at risk! Keep an eye on offers, especially on cleaning products which can get expensive!
Take advantage of your student card wherever you go. You should get a least 10% off in many popular retail stores. Limit yourself each month to a certain spend – if you have any left!
See if you can share books with friends on your course. Buying 5 or 6 books can get very expensive as they range from £20 - £60 each.
Mid-week is generally cheaper for going out, just don’t let it affect your studies! Always keep an eye out for vouchers online and being handed out on the street.
If you use public transport regularly, make sure you buy monthly passes – you’ll save a lot in the long run. If you have your own car be careful how generous you are with giving lifts. It will come back to bite you! Come to an agreement with those who may use your car regularly to contribute towards petrol costs.
It’s important to stay healthy and happy, but see if what you are paying for can be done for free. Eg If you are only using the running machine at the gym – go for a run outside instead!
Remember that if you have a contract you will be tied down to that expenditure for up to 2 years! Make sure you can afford it! If you use pay as you go, make sure you keep track each month and set a limit. If you have a boyfriend or girlfriend make sure they share the load with phone calls (especially if they work!)
