University of the Year
The opening of the new building comes at an exciting time for the University as they were named Times Higher Education University of the Year in November 2013. The ribbon cutting ceremony was carried out by the University's Vice Chancellor, Professor Bob Cryan and current Students' Union President Nosheen Dad. The ceremony to open Student Central attracted a large crowd of students and staff who were all keen to take a tour on the new facilities. Professor Cryan "was absolutely bowled over!” and was delighted that the work had been completed ahead of schedule, giving students early access to the fantastic new facilities. You can read more about the opening of Student Central on our news pages.
Student and staff hub
The building is a unique hub for students and staff, combining easier access to library, computing, sport, leisure, eating and meeting facilities for students and staff. The Centre contains a new eight court sports hall – almost twice the size of our old sports hall, an 80-space fitness suite featuring state-of-the-art Technogym ARTIS equipment, two squash courts and dance studios. The Students’ Union is now located in new purpose-built facilities offering students and staff access to four or five new food outlets including Starbucks and Costa as well as a new shop.
Visitors have access to a central reception desk offering meet and greet, support, directions and advice. Key student services including careers, welfare support and international support are more immediately accessible to students. The ground floor accommodates up to 1,000 people at any one time and provides space for students to chill-out or work on projects with other students. On the top floor, conference facilities are available for visiting groups and University meetings.
