Health and Safety

University's health and safety strategy 2014/2018

Carrying a foreword from the Vice-Chancellor the strategy consists of: -

  • The overall mission for health and safety for the university;
  • The key aims for delivery over the strategy's period;
  • Enablers to secure delivery of these aims individually or collectively;
  • Areas against which successful delivery of the strategy can measured; and
  • The relevant enablers of the university's overall strategy to which delivery of the health and safety strategy will contribute.

Appended to the stratagy are year-by-year health and safety challenges to, and opportunities for, the university. 

Office of Health and Safety

Mission and vision

To be a Supportive, Approachable, Flexible and Enabling advisory service.

To be recognised as an authoritative and competent advisory service which supports a practical and flexible approach to integrated risk management and fosters a culture of personal responsibility throughout the university.

Roles within the university

  • To promote health, safety and wellbeing awareness and good practice across the university's community.
  • To advise the Vice-Chancellor and University Council on the implementation of the university’s health and safety policy document.
  • Provide a specialist advisory service on matters of safety, health and wellbeing as they relate to the univeristy's activities, facilities etc.

Areas of activity

  • Develop and maintain the university's health and safety policy document and the specific policies, guidance notes etc. that support its delivery.
  • Develop, deliver and assist in sourcing health and safety training and awareness
  • Maintain incident records, monitoring trends, reporting statistics, reviewing local follow up investigations and carrying out independent investigations where warranted.
  • Advise on safety and fire precautions in the design and use of buildings, plant and equipment.
  • Carry out audits of health and safety risk management arrangements within individual academic schools and support services.
  • Liaison with key external organisations (e.g. Health and Safety Executive, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, West Yorkshire Police; Kirklees Metropolitan Council)

Occupational health

The university's Occupational Health Department (OHD) is a separate function to the Office of Health and Safety, and resides within the Human Resources Group: -

Areas of the university's health and safety policy document OHD takes central lead on are: -

  • First aid;
  • Display screen equipment;
  • Work-related stress; and
  • Health Surveillance
