Information for staff

The Careers and Employability Service offers impartial careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) in compliance with Section B4 of the QAA code of practice for the assurance of academic quality and standards in higher education, 2010.

We encourage all staff to work in partnership with us to support students in their career development learning.  On this webpage you will find information about what support we currently provide, however, if you have an idea for enhancing your students’ employment prospects and think that we might be able to help, please do get in touch.

Stephen Boyd is the service manager with overall responsibility for its strategic and operational direction; including professional development and service profile-raising.

Careers Advisers

Each academic school has a designated careers adviser who acts as the first point of contact.  All careers advisers are professionally trained, qualified and experienced in fulfilling a consultancy role to ensure that students receive appropriate careers support.

Employer Services Team
This is an outward facing team with two basic remits;

  • To bring employers on to campus with the aim of ensuring that students and graduates are made aware of relevant and appropriate opportunities and to facilitate student/industry contact.
  • To seek to advertise appropriate, good quality employment opportunities to students and graduates through the online vacancies database, JobShop.

Careers Information Team
The first point of contact for the Careers and Employability Service, this team:

  • Manages the comprehensive Careers Information Library and careers website for students.
  • Researches and develops careers information and resources.
  • Deals with all initial enquiries into the Careers and Employability Service.
  • Oversees marketing of the Service.

The Careers and Employability Service website for students and graduates has vast amounts of information and advice on career planning, job/placement seeking, application process - CVs, interviews and assessment centres and more.

 

Working together

A brief overview of services we offer:

  • Assist students and graduates with finding work                                                             Our team of careers advisers are qualified to offer advice and guidance to students to help them define their career ideas and improve their competitivity in the graduate jobs market. 
  • A central programme of workshops

A good starting point for any student putting together a CV or considering where to look for work is our weekly workshop programme, available on the Events section of our website.

  • Advertise good quality, appropriate vacancies
    JobShop is the only place in the university where students have instant online access to the latest part time, graduate, voluntary and vacation opportunities.   
    • Support new and existing initiatives within your department
      The service is widely recognised as being an excellent source of research and expertise regarding employability and Personal Development Planning. Contact us for further information.
    • Career Management Skills (CMS) module
      Delivered via an online, interactive VLE, the CMS module can be tailored to meet individual requirements and used with any student group to enhance existing CPD/work based learning. To discuss your requirements please contact the careers adviser for your Academic School.
  • Careers information and resources
    Available online and in the careers information library. Please contact the Careers Information Team for further details.
  • Career Mentoring
    Bringing together previous and current students can enhance the employability of both. Find out more in the Career Mentoring Network section of the website or contact Sue Spence, Careers Adviser for details.
  • Bespoke inputs for your students
    These can be delivered as lectures or interactive workshops and are available to all year groups including postgraduate students to support career development activities within your department.  Please get in touch with your link careers adviser to discuss specific requirements.
  • Track what students do after graduation
    Details are collected via the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey.
