Social Cohesion Research Group

informal multi-racial group in education setting

Introduction

This research group provides a focus for those interested in broad and varied understandings of social cohesion. Much of the current work focuses in particular on ethnic cohesion, community cohesion, and underpinning debates around the meaning and practice of multiculturalism and their implications for educational policy and practice with young people and communities.

However, such debates are closely connected to wider concerns around economic and social inequality and cohesion, and we envisage working with and across other research groups. A regular series of seminars on community cohesion and related topics has been organised under the cross-campus Academy for British and Irish Studies, and there are already good working relationships on issues of cohesion with key colleagues in the School of Human and Health Sciences. We continue to welcome the broadening of the current research focus, so if you are interested in getting involved, please contact the convener.
