Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Huddersfield

Welcome from the Dean

On behalf of all staff, I would like to welcome you to the international, award-winning,  School of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Huddersfield.

Our mission is to foster the next generation of creative researchers and practitioners, who will maximise their contribution to the cultural, social, environmental and economic well being of society.

We passionately believe in providing a dynamic and interactive learning community which allows students and staff to nurture, develop and exploit their creative talents towards their own professional intent.  At the heart of our provision is an ideas led approach to creative risk, exploration, questioning, entrepreneurship and collaboration towards the pursuit of the most innovative and creative work. Our staff and students frequently win very prestigious national and international awards.

Creativity is the currency of our time and it has no boundaries.

The School's research environment is built around the Creative Interdisciplinary Research Centre (CIRC). CIRC is founded on a critical presence that aims to traverse the dominant disciplines of art, design and architecture while simultaneously enabling the margins of different practices to co-exist. Future research will also incorporate Architecture and the Built Environment. The central ethos of CIRC is to enable academic staff to actively locate their professional practice interests within their teaching. A student can therefore expect to receive the highest quality of teaching, which is founded upon artists, designers, historians and critical theorists operating within international and world leading arenas.

Our students are ready for employment and/or further study by the unique way we structure our courses to reflect the way in which the creative industries work, thereby offering students a multitude of experience in real life situations.  We work closely with employers and professional statutory bodies to ensure currency of the curriculum at all times to ensure all graduates of the school will have well developed creative, technical and cognitive skills as well as business knowledge and understanding.

Our students and staff are making an impact through valuing reflective and critical approaches to the exchange of ideas within an equal opportunity context, including the understanding of cultures, diversity, individuality and creative practices.

Thank you for expressing an interest in our School. Please explore this web site and do not hesitate to engage with us in the future.

We look forward to welcoming you to our school either as a student or to work, in partnership, with you.
