Applied research is carried out in the rheology of foodstuffs, the isolation and study of food macromolecules and the study and modification of carbohydrates.
In microbiology, the degradation of biological materials and its effect on trapped nuclear waste is being studied. In more applied research we work with many companies on the application of microbiological hygiene.
Research active staff run their research programmes under the umbrella of the Institute of Materials, Medicines and Molecular Sciences, through which internal funding is allocated and overall policy agreed. Extensive collaboration is in place with colleagues in the commercial wing of the Department, IPOS (Innovative Physical Organic Solution).
