Healthcare, Social Sciences and Education

A healthier society

Health, well-being, happier childhoods and fulfilling educational experiences are vital elements of a contented, stable society.  Our researchers are delving deep into these areas and many more. They are doing so in partnership with bodies such as local authorities, the NSPCC , Macmillan Cancer Support  and, on a more global scale, major organisations such as UNICEF.

Research groups in fields such as childhood studies, psychology, diversity and education place great emphasis on the real-world relevance of their work. This has been felt close to home and far afield – research in post-compulsory education has centred on the North of England, while an important project investigating child abuse    took place in the Caribbean.

Important work in many areas of healthcare is developing new approaches and therapies in a wide variety of fields, including back pain, post-natal depression, the treatment of drug addiction and the care of the terminally ill.

Education research meets the highest academic criteria but also lays stress on the needs of employers and the community as a whole. Technology is harnessed too, and the University is a Europe-leader in the introduction of electronic research resources for staff and students.

Outlined below are the areas within the University where we are carrying out research related to this theme.
