The University of Huddersfield is passionate about expanding the frontiers of human knowledge and aims to provide an exceptional environment for research and for the development of researchers and research careers.
In pursuit of these goals we strive to recruit talented academic staff and postgraduate researchers who share our vision, our values and our goals and provide them with the inspiration, support and leadership they need to achieve their very best.
The University supports the strategic development of research by providing significant internal financial support for research projects and helps researchers to build on this foundation by leveraging additional research grant and contract income from external sponsors of high-quality research such as the research councils, charities, industry and commerce.
In order to ensure stimulating interdisciplinary work at the cutting edge we encourage our researchers to form concentrations of research excellence such as institutes and research centres that are capable of providing first-class resources and of attracting the finest collaborators, regionally, nationally and internationally. The most recent of these include the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology, the International Institute for Accelerator Applications and the Institute for Materials, Medicines and Molecular Sciences.
We support the career and personal development of our researchers through structured training programmes, through mentoring by senior researchers, and by providing individual funding to support their own initiatives to improve the intellectual climate in which they work, and to facilitate core activities such as conference presentation, external representation and international networking.
Our programmes to support public engagement by researchers include a well-regarded annual Research Festival and in 2011 a Researchers’ Night event sponsored by the European Commission.
The focus and value of everything we do in support of research and researchers is constantly reviewed and revised in keeping with international standards as embodied in the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, the European Charter for Researchers and Code of Conduct for their Recruitment and the QAA Code of Practice for Research Degree Programmes.
Our ultimate aim is nothing less than to guarantee the sustainable production of excellent research with impact that will contribute significantly to global quality of life.
We engage with the national agenda in the following ways:
