Biography

I joined the School of Music, Humanities and Media at the end of 2005 as the Coordinator of Humanities. I completed my PhD in English Literature and Politics, an Althusserian analysis of the novels of Katharine Susannah Prichard, in 1997 at the University of New England, New South Wales, Australia. Previously I’ve worked as a lecturer in the English Studies Program at the University of Wollongong, in New South Wales, Australia from 1998-2005 and as a casual tutor in the Department of English and Communication Studies at the University of New England, also in NSW, from 1993-1997.

Research & Scholarship

Since completing my doctoral studies, my research has concentrated on the representation of Indigeneity in a variety of different texts and media, including literature, film, children’s literature, popular culture, advertising, mega events (eg worlds fairs and Olympic Games) and museology. My work is informed by a variety of postcolonial, Marxist, whiteness and critical race theories. I’ve been involved in two collaborative, interdisciplinary research partnerships:

‘Authenticity: Globalisation and Indigenous Culture’ With Professor Adam Shoemaker, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia for which we received a 2 year Australian Research Council Discovery Grant (AUD84,000) in 2004-2005.

‘Critical Reconciliation Studies’ with Dr Catriona Elder, in the Sociology Department at the University of Sydney, Australia and Dr Angela Pratt, Office of the Health Minister, Australian Federal Parliament

I am on the editorial board of Studies in Australasian Cinema and the Journal of University Learning Experience and review for World Literatures in English. I have undertaken media broadcasts including being a panellist on Battle of the Books, Australian Literature episode. Broadcast on BBC4 Television and on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Radio National Life Matters both in 2004.

I have also pursued a research interest in pedagogy and specifically the application of constructivist theories in the use of teaching and learning technologies in higher education, particularly in distributed learning settings. I was invited to give a keynote paper on Distributed Learning at the International Conference on Hybrid Learning, in Hong Kong in August 2008.
