Biography

Mike Lucock is Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Huddersfield and Associate Director of Research in the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

He qualified as a clinical psychologist in 1985, completed post qualification training in cognitive therapy in 1997. He has worked as a clinician in adult mental health, older adults’ services, health psychology and primary care settings. He completed a PhD in 1994 in the area of health anxiety and patients’ responses to reassurance in medical settings and worked on various practice based research projects until he began his current post in 2001.

His main research activity has been focused on self-help/self management/self care in mental health and psychological therapies process and outcome research in routine NHS service settings. His research has involved a range of methodological approaches, including RCTs, generating practice based evidence and qualitative research.

Mike Lucock is currently a member of the Institute for Research in Citizenship and Applied Human Sciences, the Centre for Health and Social Care Research and the Centre for Applied Psychological Research.

Research interests

Mike Lucock’s main research interests are self-help approaches to mental health problems and psychological therapies process and outcomes research. He has collaborated with NHS clinicians, service user researchers and academics in a wide range of research projects in mental health as shown by the projects listed below.

Research Degree Supervision

Main area of interest for PhD supervision is self help/self management approaches in mental health service provision. Currently supervising three PhDs and one MRes.

Enterprise Activities

Lead in the Self-help Access in Routine Primary Care (SHARP) project which includes a training programme for NHS staff and the development of accessible self-help resources for common mental health problems. The SHARP resources are available on a website, www.primarycare-selfhelp.co.uk.

Teaching and Professional Activities

  • Teaching subjects include psychological therapies research, cognitive behavioural therapy, primary care mental health, self-help approaches in mental health.
  • Contributions to modules for Advanced Nurse Practitioner MSc; Approved Mental Health Practitioners; Introduction to CBT; CBT for Older People.
  • Lead in developing Self-help Access in Routine Primary Care (SHARP) training programme for primary care practitioners.
  • Supervision of dissertations for MSc Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy.
