Dr Karen Ousey

Karen is a Reader in Advancing Clinical within the Division of Podiatry and clinical Sciences. Karen moved to the University of Huddersfield in 2005. Her clinical background is in orthopaedics and tissue viability, she has worked in NHS hospitals in the North West of England and London. She became a lecturer/practitioner in 1997 with the University of Salford prior to undertaking a full time lecturing role there in 2000.

My research work is firmly linked to frontline care delivery. It has involved working collaboratively with industry partners (Molnlycke, Smith & Nephew, BSN Healthcare, KCI, Convatec, Advancis Healthcare) and the NHS (Calderdale and Huddersfield Foundation Trust, Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust, Salford Royal Foundation NHS Trust). The relationship between applied research, evaluation, audit and rapid systematic reviewing for building evidence is significant; as is the necessity to translate new knowledge into practice.

Challenges in Wound Care

I have been instrumental in developing an e learning wound care tool entitled Challenges in Wound Care (http://www.challengesinwoundcare.org/) that is now fully operational. The package is an interactive on line teaching and learning tool for practitioners involved in wound care and tissue viability. It aims to offer an inter-professional approach to wound care and tissue viability issues encouraging an awareness of professional roles and the need for liaison and referral to ensure optimum patient care and enhance professional practice. The package is split into two sections and uses a problem based learning format with case studies scenarios centred on the assessment, diagnosis and management of various wound care scenarios.

On line mentor update package

This on line mentor update tool was designed with funding from Yorkshire and Humber Strategic Health Authority (SHA). The idea was conceived within the School of Human and Health Sciences and was adopted by the SHA to be used across the region.

I am module leader for the Masters modules in Tissue Viability and Wound Management; Management of Leg Ulceration; Minor Surgical Interventions (Dermatology) and Wound Debridement. From September 2012 Tissue Viability and Wound Management and Management of Leg Ulceration are both to be offered as on line delivery, with wikis and on line tutorials providing student support and the use of an on line portfolio to be completed by the learner and their named clinical mentor to ensure theory related to practice.

Additionally I teach on the Professional Doctorate Route, Masters in Research and podiatry modules.
