I am a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Statistics, having joined the University of Huddersfield (School of Human and Health Sciences) in January 2010.
Before joining the University I was employed as an engineer for about 10 years in the nuclear industry; initially for the UK Atomic Energy Authority, and subsequently for British Energy. My work involved modelling of bore cracking in nuclear reactor fuel bricks and channel bore characterisation. I also worked for about 5 years as a mathematics lecturer in Further Education.
I have a first degree in mathematics from the University of Sheffield, MSc(Eng) and MPhil degrees in materials science from the University of Liverpool, and a PhD in medical statistics from Cardiff University. I am a Chartered Mathematician (CMath MIMA) and am a member of the Royal Statistical Society with Graduate Statistician status (FRSS GradStat).
Research & Scholarship
University research group memberships
I am currently a member of the Institute for Research in Citizenship and Applied Human Sciences and the Centre for Health and Social Care Research. I formed and am a current member of the Applied Statistics Special Interest Group. I am also a current member of the Skin Interface Sciences Special Interest Group.
I am involved with a wide variety of research projects in clinical and medical areas, and am a contributor to the University of Huddersfield 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) submission (Unit of Assessment 3). I am a co-author of published work in fields including:
- Primary caries modelling: assessment of restoration of symptomless primary teeth; development of novel modelling approaches
- Tissue viability: healing times in pre-tibial lacerations; efficacy of negative pressure wound healing; wound blistering
- Ophthalmological studies: methods of macular hole measurement; assessment of visual acuity and incidence of retinal breaks in eye surgery
- Pharmaceutical sciences: efficacy of asthma inhalation devices; skin permeability methods
- Genetics: associations between genetic factors and personality disorders
- Surgical site infections: identification of risk factors associated with infection
- Depression in the elderly: assessment of methods of identification
- Facial skin cancer: psychological impact of surgical procedures
- Clinical education: workshop evaluations, evaluation of wound care training, perceptions of academic learning.
Modelling techniques employed in these projects include: multilevel (hierarchical) modelling; parametric survival analysis/competing risk modelling; multiple regression; generalised linear modelling/analysis of binary data; multivariate methods.
