Biography

I graduated from the college of Ripon and York St. John as an occupational therapist many years ago! After working in a range of both physical and mental health settings I specialised in working with people with learning disabilities in secure environments and have extensive experience of working in a variety of settings both at home and overseas. I enjoyed a wonderful sun filled time in Bermuda developing services for people with a learning disability as well as learning how to scuba dive! I have also worked as a Director of rehabilitation in Newfoundland Canada.

I achieved the level 5 Management Charter in Initiative in 1997 and subsequently I completed my MSc in health professional education in 2002, here at the University of Huddersfield, investigating the use of occupation in secure care for my dissertation.

I was previously a lecturer/practitioner as part of the Learning Disability Research Unit here at the University of Huddersfield, and joined the University staff full time in 2004 to develop and lead the new Occupational Therapy course.

I am a member of the college of occupational therapists and the Health Professions Council

Teaching & Academic Responsibilities

I am practice placement co-ordinator for Occupational Therapy. I plan, co-ordinate, develop and monitor all aspects of practice learning in traditional and non traditional settings, working closely with academic colleagues from other institutions and practitioners throughout West Yorkshire. I provide ongoing practice educator courses and support systems to enable practice educators to facilitate high quality practice based experiences for occupational therapy students.

My teaching interests are in the areas of contextual influences on practice, social justice and inclusion, professional development and inter-professional working. I am also interested in creative ways of working with both clients and students. I am a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I am first year leader and also teach across all three years being module leader for the following:

  • Yr 1 "Context of occupation and practice"
  • Yr 2 "Enhancing occupational performance of groups and communities"
  • Yr 3 Joint module leader “Interventions in Practice” (an interdisciplinary module).

I also supervise undergraduate interdisciplinary group research projects and masters level dissertations.

  • I sit on the school practice placement quality committee as well as the school research committee as a departmental representative.
  • I am an active member of the national practice placement tutors forum and a reviewer for the British Journal of occupational therapy.
  • I am an external examiner for Northumbria University and a Health Professions Council Visitor.
  • I am a trustee on the management board of Cloverleaf Advocacy.

Research & Scholarship

2001-2003. Research grant NHS Research Capacity funded project via University of Huddersfield “Caseload management in community learning disability teams: influences on decision making.” 2001-2003, £20,000.

I am now working towards my PhD. I am exploring the journey that occupational therapy students make as they develop into occupational therapists, the transitions which they undergo and the process which facilitate this journey. I am interested in narrative methods and grounded theory.
