Biography

Dr Xichun Luo is a Reader in ultra precision manufacturing within the Centre for Precision Technologies (CPT) at the University of Huddersfield where he leads an Advanced Machining Research Group. Xichun Luo has substantial experience in ultra precision diamond turning, diamond grinding, micromachining and focused ion bean (FIB) nanofabrication.

Xichun began his professional career in nanomanufacturing in 1998 at Harbin Institute of Technology in China, where he obtained his first PhD and two national awards because of his success in molecular dynamics simulation study. During his second PhD study at Leeds Metropolitan University, he has extensive involvement in EPSRC, DTI and some industrial projects. His research activities include modelling and simulation of precision machining processes, conceptual design of five-axis bench type ultra precision milling/grinding centre and precision machined surfaces metrology. In 2004 he joined Cranfield University after completing his second PhD. He was engaged on an EPSRC project, which seeks to develop a first-class ultra precision large freeform grinding machine tool for processing nanometrically smooth and precise complex shape surfaces for ground based Extremely Large Telescope(ELT). He was centrally involved in an EPSRC IMRC project on ultra precision machining of complex form silicon optics and played a key role in an EPSRC IMRC project on freeform machining next generation IR optics. At Cranfield he was also involved in ultra precision diamond turning of mid-IR spectrometers for James Web Space Telescope, which will be lunched in 2018 to replace Hubble Space Telescope. In 2007, he became a lecturer within the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Heriot-Watt University and established the Precision Engineering Research Group and FIB nanofabrication lab. In May 2012 he joined the University of Huddersfield to lead the Advanced Machining Research Group.

Research & Scholarship

Dr. Xichun Luo and his research group have established expertise in ultra precision machining and nanomanufacturing research, as evidenced by more than 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences, his contribution to one book and one invited book chapter (Microfabrication and Nanomanufacturing), the opening oral presentation on ASPE international conference, invited talks at top precision engineering research institutes and companies (including Fraunhofer IPT). Since 2009, he has successfully secured nearly £2.2m funding from EPSRC, SFC, ROE and industries (Renishaw, STMicroeletronics, Spanoptic, etc.). He is selected as Scottish Crucibles (future research leaders in Scotland) by Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2010. Xichun is an editor of American Journal of Material Sciences and scientific committees of several international conferences in Precision Machining.
