Jane began her career as a very young apprentice and spent 20 years in the Chinese automotive industry finishing her industrial career as a fully qualified Engineer. In 1990, she started her academic life as an MSc student. She obtained her PhD in measurement science in 1995. She was awarded a Chair in 2003, a DSc for precision metrology in 2007 and the Director of the EPSRC Centre in Advanced Metrology 2011. Jane possesses both industrial and academic backgrounds in measurement science and precision engineering and enjoys creative research moving the subject forward. Jane’s research involves two major aspects: optical interferometry technology for fast on/in-line surface/geometry measurement; and mathematical modelling with characterisation technology for surface metrology. Besides this, she enjoys philosophical research in this subject area, successfully leading a Paradigm Shifts Review in Surface Metrology (Proc. Roy. Soc. A, 2007) and a 2011 Royal Society Discussion Meeting “Ultra Precision Engineering – from Physics to Manufacturing” (Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A 2012).
Jane has published over 230 papers, author/co-authored 8 books and several patents on measurement science/surface metrology. Currently, she holds a prestigious Frontier Research Programme (Advanced Scheme) sponsored by the European Research Council for well-established word-leading researchers. She is a principle member of ISO/TC 213 and BSI TW/4, as well as an Advisory Member for the UK National Measurement System.
Jane was awarded a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award and the Outstanding Asian Woman of Achievement Award in 2006. She is a Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), a Fellow of Institute of Engineering Technologies (FIET), a Fellow of Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and a Fellow of the International Academy of Production Research (FCIRP).

She has published more than 190 papers on measurement science and surface metrology, has three principle papers in the Proc R. Soc. Lond. A. She has written one book, co-authored four books and has been an editor for two special issues for the Institute of Physics in the UK 2006. She has been awarded £2.5 million in research funds (from research councils, industry and overseas). She is a principal member of TC/213 committee 'Dimensional Geometrical Products Specification and Verification' and the BSI TW/4 committee 'Engineering drawing, metrology, precision measurement and all related documentation', a DIUS Measurement Advisory Committee Member and Consultant expert to China TC 240 Standardisation Committee.
She was awarded a Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award in March 2006, becoming the first Royal Society Wolfson Research Fellow from a new University in any subject area. She was awarded a UK national prize, the Outstanding Woman of Achievement Award – The Lloyds TSB AWA (Asian Woman Achievement) Award on 2006. She was also awarded the title: Fifth most influential woman of Chinese origin in 2006, by the Woman of China.
Prof. Jiang is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering Technology (IET), a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce (RSA) and a Member of the International Academy of Production Engineering (College International pour la Recherche en Productique, CIRP). Professor Jiang was presented to the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh as one of the 'People who have made a significant contribution to national and regional life in 2006' at a Buckingham Palace Reception on 19th December 2006. She has been an Ambassador of Huddersfield since 2006.

Surface and Precision Metrology is the scientific investigation of ultra precision and micro/nano scale surface measurement, the development of methods for measuring these surfaces, and characterising and modelling of their measured data. Discovering the surface behaviour and creating methods to diagnose, monitor, and predict surface properties and functionalities are my main research interests, which I would like to train and supervise PhD students.
The candidate should have good scientific curiosity and considerable background in physics, or mathematics, or engineering science, or decent hands-on experiences in instrument design, surface measurement and machine tools. The five aspect subjects are as follows:
