Biography

My first degree was in Nuclear Engineering at Manchester University. I was sponsored by the UK Atomic Energy Authority during my degree and following a pre-university gap year working at Risley, and summer placements at Windscale and Dounraey, I joined the Decommissioning Development team at Windscale as a graduate engineer. In 1989 I joined Huddersfield University as a lecturer and embarked on a part time PhD the following year. This PhD on ‘enhancing finite element analysis boundary stress predictions’ was supervised by John Smart of Manchester University and was awarded in 1996. I was Subject Area Leader in Mechanical and Automotive Engineering for eight years prior to being appointed as Reader within the Turbocharger Research Institute in 2014. I am an editor for the Central European Journal of Engineering and a reviewer for seven international journals. I am also a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Academic Assessment Committee and the Academic Standards Panel.

My major teaching commitment is in the area of solid mechanics and finite element analysis although I have previously taught Enterprise and fundamental Mechanical Science. I was previously Course Leader for our MEng/BEng courses in the Mechanical and Automotive Engineering area and piloted these courses through three accreditation visits by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Outside the University I am a keen mountain biker.

Research & Scholarship

My current research is on the structural integrity of turbocharger systems with a particular focus on the V-band retainers used to join turbocharger housings together. These retainers have a flat- bottomed V-shaped cross section and bring together a pair of mating circular flanges. The greatest benefit offered by this type of connector over more normal bolted connections is speed of use, since only one nut has to be tightened. Outside the turbocharger industry, V-bands are used to join parts of the exhaust system including particulate filter housings. They are also the method preferred by both NASA and the European Space Agency for fastening satellites into the delivery vehicles (rockets or Shuttle). Working with industry I have developed the first published theory explaining how the stresses and internal forces in a V-band joint can be calculated. I have supervised three PhD students investigating V-band behaviour and performance and have published 11 journal and conference papers in this area.

Previously, I have researched air bearings which are widely used in the precision machining and metrology industries. In this type of bearing, the two bearing surfaces are separated by a film of air. This film may be generated by an externally applied pressurised air source or by the internal aerodynamic effect if the relative velocity of the surfaces is high. I started work in this area in 2000 and have successfully supervised a PhD on flat pad bearings. During this PhD a flat pad bearing rig was developed along with a bearing analysis code. These have been used to produce data which has been published in journal and conference papers. I am interested in investigating the application of air bearings within turbochargers.

In association with these two research areas I also have an interest in multi-criteria optimisation. I have successfully supervised two PhD students in this area.

I have worked closely with the Centre for Precision Engineering since its inception looking at the application of finite element analysis in areas ranging from the stresses at the interface between hip implants and bone cement to the deformation of large machine tools.

I am also keen to take part in industrial collaboration as consultancy or using government funding. I have previously supervised five Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and I am currently supervising another.
