My first degree was in Nuclear Engineering at Manchester University. I joined Huddersfield University in 1989 as a lecturer and embarked on a part time PhD the following year. This PhD on 'enhancing finite element analysis boundary stress predictions ' was supervised by John Smart of Manchester University and was awarded in 1996. I am currently Subject Area Leader in Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, an associate member of the Centre for Precision Technologies and a reviewer for the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Part J, Journal of Engineering Tribology and Part H, Journal of Engineering in Medicine. I am also a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Academic Assessment Committee.
My major teaching commitment is in the area of solid mechanics and finite element analysis although I have previously taught Enterprise and fundamental Mechanical Science. I am also the Course Leader for our accredited MEng/BEng courses in the Mechanical and Automotive Engineering area.
I represent my Subject Area on various School Committees relating to academic standards and quality, management and resources. I also represent the School at University level as a member of the Teaching and Learning Committee and the Race and Religion Forum.
Outside the University I am a Beaver Scout Leader and keen mountain biker.
I have two main research interests: V-band retainers and air bearings. V-band retainers are thin walled circular bands with a flat-bottomed V-shaped cross section. Used in conjunction with a pair of flanged ends, they provide a method of retaining two mating circular cross section parts. The greatest benefit offered by this type of connector over more normal bolted connections is speed of use, since only one nut has to be tightened. Probably the largest current use of V-band retainers is on turbochargers for diesel engines. V-bands are also the method preferred by both NASA and the European Space Agency for fastening satellites into the delivery vehicles (rockets or Shuttle). Working with industry I have developed the first published theory explaining how the stresses and internal forces in a V-band joint can be calculated. This was detailed in a PhD that I supervised and has been published in journal and conference papers.
Air bearings are widely used in the precision machining and metrology industries. IN this type of bearing the two bearing surfaces are separated by a film of air. This film may be generated by an externally applied pressurised air source or by the internal aerodynamic effect if the relative velocity of the surfaces is high. I started work in this area in 2000 and have successfully supervised a PhD on flat pad bearings. During this PhD a flat pad bearing rig was developed along with a bearing analysis code. These have been used to produce data which has been published in journal and conference papers. I currently have a Research Fellow working on a novel compound restrictor air bearing. I have a more general interest in the performance of precision machine tools and the assessment/improvement of their accuracy using finite element analysis. I am currently supervising a PhD student working in the Machine Precision section of the Centre for Precision Technologies.
In association with these two research areas I also have an interest in multi-criteria optimisation. I have successfully supervised a PhD student in this area and am currently supervising a second.
I am also keen to take part in industrial collaboration as consultancy or using government funding. I have previously supervised a Knowledge Transfer Partnership, am currently supervising another and am about to start a further two.
