Biography

Simon Fletcher is a Senior Research Fellow working within the Engineering Control and Machine Performance group (ECMPG).  With more than 12 years experience in machine tool accuracy improvement including error identification, avoidance and compensation, he has helped establish the group international reputation for research into machine tool precision.

Simon is currently working on consultancy activities primarily involving detailed geometric and thermal performance assessments for high precision manufacture and also funding applications including EPSRC.

Born in Northallerton, North Yorkshire he began studying engineering in 1989 at York college of Arts and Technology. Completing a BTEC National Diploma in Computer Aided Engineering in 1991 he then began a four year degree in the same field at the University of Huddersfield. Receiving an Honors degree in 1995 he was then offered the opportunity to do a PhD by Professor Derek Ford. His PhD ran in conjunction with the ‘RECOVER‘ project which was jointly funded by the EPSRC and industrial collaboration. He defended his thesis titled 'Computer Aided System for Intelligent Implementation of Machine Tool Error Reduction Methodologies' in 2001. Since then, Simon has continued post doctoral research in this field of engineering and now works as a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Precision Technologies.

He has been the leading researcher on two successful EPSRC projects RECOVER and REDUCE and industrial project STRUCTURES managing all industrial collaboration and research activity. He was also heavily involved with the EPSRC project CAPM also covering many aspects of machine tool control and metrology. Dr Fletcher has created new techniques and software for measurement, analysis and compensation of machine tool errors including thermal errors and has written 5 conference papers and 3 journal papers on the subject. Currently he is the director of studies for two PhD research students and regular MSc projects with related topics.
