Biography

Leigh is currently a Senior Lecturer in Mechancial Engineering in the School of Computing and Engineering. After graduating with a BEng(hons) in Engineering Design: Mechanical from the University, she continued her studies completing a PhD in “The Use of 3D Analysis Techniques to Investigate the Wear of Femoral Stems in Total Hip Replacment” before moving into industry, working for DePuy International in their research and test department.

Since returning to academia, Leigh has worked on a number of research projects including: SOLADIM, a DTI funded project to investigate defect detection in semi-conductor materials; a number of industrial projects looking at the use of surface metrology to optimise manufacturing processes and functionality; investigations into wear of a range of orthopaedic implants; and NanoMEND, an FP7 project to investigate the possibilities of online measurement, detection and repair of defects in roll to roll processes.

Currently Leigh is expanding her measurement knowledge to apply to healthcare situations and recently wrote an editorial for Wounds UK to show how Engineers can work collaboratively with clinicians to improve the quality of basic care offered.

Her acadmic duties include teaching of Materials, Thermofluids and Investigative Studies. She is course leader for the Engineering Foundation Year and is also the Athena Swann Champion for the department. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has a PGCert in Higher Education Practice.

Research & Scholarship

Leigh is currently working on a number of projects looking at friction, shear and pressure in the pressurecare and woundcare industries, and is an active member of the Skin Interface Sciences Research Group investigating the integrity of skin at patient device interfaces. With medical devices a particular interest of Leigh’s she is also working on a TSB funded project in collaboration with ORTHOX, Cardiff University and 3T to characterise the surface of novel materials for meniscal repair in knee surgery.

In adition to medical applications, Leigh is also interested in the measurement and characterisation of surfaces for different disciplines and has experiences with characterisation of wear, and manufacturing processes in a number of industries; these include automotive components, aerospace components, tooling, ballistics and manufacturing.

Leigh is also interested in Engineering education, and is particularly keen on public engagement activites particularly with school children of all ages.
