Biography

Leigh Fleming is currently a research fellow in the Centre for Precision Technologies. During her studies at the University of Huddersfield for a BEng (Hons) in Engineering Design : Mechanical Leigh completed 2 industrial placements, the first with a pump manufacturer in Annecy, France for 3 months and then a 9 month placement engineering industrial blowers.

Leigh's primary engineering interest has always been the application of engineering to medical problems, and as such undertook her PhD in
"The Use of 3D surface analysis techniques to investigate the wear of matt Surface finish femoral stems in total hip replacement" Under the supervision of Professor Liam Blunt in the Centre for Precision Technologies.

Whilst writing up her thesis she went to work for DePuy International in research and development where she was employed as a research engineer in the product test group.

Leigh returned to the Centre for Precision Technologies in 2005 where she is currently employed as a research fellow.

Leigh's interests outside work include cooking and knitting.

Research & Scholarship

Leigh's main research interests lie in the application of surface topography characterisation for tribological assessment and manufacturing process improvement. Her current projects are in conjunction with various commercial collaborators in the aerospace, automotive and manufacturing sectors.

In addition to the commercial projects and enterprise work that she does, she continues to research function and success of orthopaedic implants with a particular interest in contact and wear at the cement/implant interface in a number of different orthopaedic implant systems.

Having already acted as author of the NPL Good Practice Guide on measurement of super smooth surfaces, Leigh is now leading a consortium to promote and publish good practice in the surface measurement of orthopaedic implants and through her work in the areas of good practice in measurement has delivered seminars and training courses to both academics and industrialists.

More recently Leigh has developed an interest in research into innovative practice in Engineering Education.
