Professor Liam Blunt has an honours degree in Materials Technology and a PhD in "The Metallurgy of Centreless Ground surfaces" under the supervision of Dr Wilf Tomlinson at Coventry University. Prof Blunt also spent one year working as a metallurgist in failure analysis at AMTAC Laboratories in Manchester.
His Academic experience includes Post Doctoral period at Warwick University covering Microscopy of Thick and Thin Film Superconductors. Prof Blunt then moved onto Birmingham University in 1990 to work on the development of a multi properties materials tester. Whilst at Birmingham he developed an interest in tribology and surface metrology. Eventually Prof Blunt secured a lectureship and developed his research in the field of surface metrology.
In 1997 Prof Blunt moved to Huddersfield and began developing the Centre for Precision Technologies. As well as teaching in the area of Materials and Manufacturing processes. During this period the CPT has expanded from three researchers to a thirty strong activity Prof Blunt has formed extensive industrial collaborations in particular with Taylor Hobson Ltd a world leading metrology company. Prof Blunt now holds the Taylor Hobson Chair of Surface Metrology. Prof Blunt is the Director of Research for the School of Computing and Engineering.
Outside of work Prof Blunt enjoys cycling walking, running and watching his favorite team Liverpool FC
Professor Blunt has worked since 1990 in the areas of Surface Metrology and Precision Engineering. His current role is the Taylor Hobson Chair of Surface Metrology in the Centre for Precision Technologies (CPT) at the University of Huddersfield and he is the current director of research within the CPT and coordinator of external industrial activities within the centre.
Within the Centre for Precision Technologies his specific areas of research include surface metrology, the development of standards for 3D surface measurement, manufacturing processes and precision environment design. Recent success has include obtaining £1.1M EC funding for the development of written standards in 3D surface topography, where Huddersfield is the co-ordinator of an multinational project and within this project is investigating nanoscale surface finishes produced on orthopaedic implant bearing surfaces. Very recently Prof Blunt has been part of a £1.08M industrial collaborative project developing novel measurement techniques for Si wafer and optical coatings funded to through the DTI MNT initiative. Prof Blunt has developed extensive links with the collaborating companies for several years culminating in a formal research agreement with Taylor Hobson where the company funded three researchers on a rolling contract and the company support a chair in the school.
In 2005 the CPT was awarded CIC (Centre for Industrial Collaboration) status by thee regional development agency in recognition of their work with industry. Prof Blunt has been an invited speaker at CIRP meetings, annual meetings of the American Society of Precision Engineers and Japanese Society for Precision Engineering.
Prof Blunt has published over 170 papers in Journals and Conferences. Prof Blunts group have very recently gained funding for the development of a novel ballistic metrology system for for bullet and gun matching.
