Dr. Haydn Martin graduated with a BEng in Electronic Engineering from the University of Leeds in 2002. He then moved to the University of Huddersfield to study for an MSc in Embedded Systems Engineering, graduating in 2005.
Through his MSc project work he was invited to undertake PhD studies in the Centre for Precision Technology (CPT) at the University of Huddersfield. His project entitled, ‘Investigations into a Multiplexed Fibre Interferometer for On-line, Nanoscale, Surface Metrology’ was completed in 2009 under the supervision of Prof Jane Jiang and Prof Liam Blunt. The project outputs resulted in the production of an international patent and in 2009 he received the Vice-Chancellor’s Prize of Post-Graduate Researcher of the Year.
In 2009 Haydn was taken on as a Research Fellow at the CPT is now a Senior Research Fellow at the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology where he heads up the activities of the optical instrumentation research group.
Dr. Haydn Martin is a Senior Research Fellow at the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology at the University of Huddersfield. His field of research is in surface and precision metrology. His focus is on the development of novel sensing methods for producing high accuracy, stable and robust surface/dimensional metrology instrumentation targeted at embedded use within the field of high/ultra-precision and high-added value manufacture. The aim is to move metrology away from expensive, standalone, off-line instrumentation without sacrificing metrology performance.
Haydns research vision is for a tighter and more direct loop between metrology and machining to increase our ability to a) manufacture components to a higher level of complexity and precision, b) reduce the cost and improve efficiency of production. A tighter link between metrology and machining will not only enable the production of new technologies for high-end scientific applications, but also enable the commercialisation of novel technologies for the benefit of the public at large.
Haydns research combines such areas as interferometry, spectrometry, electro-optics, fibre optics, microscopy and state of the art integrated-optics. The combination of these techniques can provide the necessary attributes for embedded metrology: environmental robustness, remote/miniature probing, high speed, high sensitivity and high dynamic range.
Haydn currently co-supervises 4 PhD students in optical instrumentation research for surface metrology.
In 2012 Haydn was awarded membership of the newly created EPSRC Early Career Forum in Manufacturing Research. The forum comprises 20 members selected from academic institutions nationwide.
